I’d like to see a long term wear test with 0w-8 vs 0w-20 vs 5w-20.

"...pours like water...". Lubricates like water, also, probably.

I'm curious if the lower viscosity will contribute to faster engine wear.

Just know this. Everything they’re doing to cars these days is not to make better cars, it’s to satisfy the government. We’ve nearly reached our peak as far as ICE efficiency is concerned. Law of diminishing returns.

5w30 in the summer and 5w20 in the winter. Sacrifice your 2% fuel efficiency for engine longevity. Thank me later.

It's just CAFE regulations to boost MPG by .2% Just Google the owners manual for the Australia market, this same car and engine happily takes: 0w8 0w16 0w20 5w30 10w30

They could increase gas mileage by just making their cars more aero. Reduce drag .01cd points and gain 2mpg. Thinner oil only bumps mpg by like 0.4mpg. Not even a full mile per gallon. Heck dropping tire sizes from 19 inch to 17 inch wheels usually gives up to 4 mpgs. Smoother hubcaps give about 1-2 extra mpg. Keep thicker protective oil and just get rid of boxy car shapes with giant 19 inch wheels and huge open spokes on a sedan if you want to beat epa numbers

This makes it even more important to change your oil

Don't be fooled, when they say it's a synthetic, they are referring to the Group 3 base oils that the oil uses, and Group 3 base oils are just highly refined crude oils. They can legally call Group 3 base oils full synthetic, but the true full synthetics are Group 4 and 5 base oils. If you're running 0W-8, I highly recommend using Amsoil's 0W-8 and not the garbage OEM stuff.

it wasn't that many years ago when I was surprised at the new 0w-40 oils and then 0w-20 oils.... now there's 0w-8... at this rate, will we one day be using 0w oil? :)

31 city / 38 highway gas mileage for a 1999 corolla automatic with 4 speed using 5w30 oil.

32 city / 41 highway gas mileage for a 2024 corolla with cvt using 0w8 oil. not much difference after 25 years!

Japan consumers used this oil in their Toyotas that require this grade, but I doubt that this oil will hold up well in the US. Also, change the oil every 5, 000 miles after first oil change, which should be 500-1, 000 miles.

Unless its going to the Antarctica expedition team it doesn't make sense

Oil like that is planned to fail engines....but not before the warranty period is up! With the loose piston rings and GDI, that water oil will have no film strength to resist all that highly pressurized fuel being sprayed and squeezed into the crankcase. Its called fuel dilution. Dilution of the motor oil from raw fuel getting in it, making it even THINNER. They don't care about the engine lifespans anymore. Their only goal is to appease C.A.F.E regulations. I run 5W-30 in a vehicle that calls for 5W-20 and 0W-20. No problems. It can even run 10W-30. I wouldn't run any thinner than 5W-20 in a vehicle that calls for 0W-8. No way.

This is competitive drag race weight oil…where you tear down and refresh every season.

As to protection, based on what I know, I can’t imagine in any way that an 8 weight at full operating temp is enough for boundary layer conditions if there’s needle bearings or slow moving components in the valvetrain. Then I’d wager more oil consumption via the pcv system into the intake also. Are they port injection so you can at least run fuel additives occasionally?

We have a 2023 Camry and I'm only running 5w 20. I don't trust those 016 or those 08s. A Toyota manual tells you to change your oil every 10, 000 mi you going to believe that one too. You must not want to keep your car long

That oil wont provide enough engine protection in the Tropics. Im from the Carbbean. Using 0W8 here is insanity in any engine.

Let’s start a petition to accelerate the replacement of 0w-8 with either 0w-0 or 0w-None Full Synthetic Motor Air.

What a joke! OW-8 is colored water. Only a fool would buy a vehicle 2022 and newer that was refreshed...and I'm talking about all of this hot garbage Toyota/Lexus has been putting out.

Shear strength is sh*t, compared to 5W20. Viscosity goes into the toilet after 4-5K miles.
