Principles of Build Up
Build up describes the initial stages of a team’s progression through the pitch. A team will play out from the back to draw opposition pressure and create space in advanced areas. Playing out from the back can pose some risks, but the reward for successfully beating a press is high. The initial structure is crucial. The team should maximise width and depth to create space and stretch the opposition’s structure. The optimum route through the pitch is centrally. The pivot should connect with the defensive unit and receive behind and between. It is important that the player in possession of the ball doesn’t become isolated. Support behind and beyond the ball is crucial. Using the third man is essential during build up. The initial player should draw pressure creating additional space for the third man. It’s important that the third man is facing forward when receiving. This allows the ball to begin moving beyond opposition lines.
