The IFoA Foundation’s third fireside chat in the ‘Mentoring and our Mission’ series brings the 2023 to 2024 aspiring actuaries mentoring programme to a close.

Our panel: features Marjorie Ngwenya, Kartina Tahir Thomson, and Andrew Long in conversation with Bradley Shearer from Protagion. Their biographies are below.

The lively discussion explores Marjorie’s work as a leadership coach and past as President of the IFoA, Kartina’s past as IFoA Foundation chair and her upcoming role as President of the IFoA, and Andrew’s ambassadorship and experience co-founding the IFoA Foundation Fullerton-Long Caribbean Scholarship programme.

It also touches on volunteering, collaboration across disciplines and countries, and leadership of organisations, philanthropy and, of course, the IFoA Foundation.

Marjorie Ngwenya, FIA, is a leadership and life coach, passionate about personal growth. She’s also an independent non-executive director and non-profit trustee, and an external member of the Prudential Regulation Committee of the Bank of England, managing a portfolio career across countries and disciplines. Past President of the IFoA too (2017-2018), Marjorie was also previously editor of The Actuary magazine.

Kartina Tahir Thomson, FIA, was the previous chair of the IFoA Foundation, and will shortly become President of the IFoA (2024-2025). She sits on a number of boards, including of the Actuarial Association of Europe, a FTSE-listed company and a fintech firm, and is passionate about inclusion, social mobility and education. In an executive capacity, Kartina leads the insurance risk, regulation and governance proposition for WTW, advising insurers in the UK and Europe on regulatory matters and helping their boards with decision-making.

Andrew Long, FIA, is a Managing Director at WTW, where he specialises in advising companies and defined benefit and defined contribution pension scheme trustees on managing pension change and risk. His pension risk management experience covers the UK, the Channel Islands and the Caribbean. Andrew is also an Ambassador for the IFoA Foundation, and together with Norbert Fullerton, founded the Fullerton-Long Caribbean Scholarship programme.

CHAIR: Bradley Shearer, FIA & CFA, founded Protagion Active Career Management to support professionals, including actuaries, globally to achieve their career goals through professional mentoring and coaching. He began his career as a finance actuary, and product and pricing leadership roles followed, allowing him to gain experience across insurance, employee benefits and pensions, and investments and wealth management. He is involved in professionalism skills training for the IFoA, its Skills & Domains Committee, and its Finance & Investment Board.
