He didn't check to see if he was CPU limited. Didn't bother to tell us the CPU model. He didn't check if he was overheating the CPU or reaching TDP limits. Not good enough.

Thank you for not holding your final opinion till the very end of the video! I watched your entire video anyway, but it’s sometimes irritating to wait

Displaying an eGPU on an external display would degrade performance a tiny bit, due to the bandwidth limit of TB3. I personally have a great setup with two AOC 4k monitors on an RTX2060 eGPU. Now my laptop (A Dell Inspiron 7706) has a dedicated gpu, but it's only an MX-series GPU, so I really benefit having the RTX2060 on my docking setup and I can seamlessly have a laptop for when I go to nursing school or just out and about and want to play a game or two and a desktop-like docking setup when I come home and do homework or game without having two separate PC's.

I guess one of the big advantages of eGPU would be if you're doing a lot of graphics work or long gaming sessions, heatsoak is a problem in just about every laptop and extended load on discrete internal GPU will saturate cooling systems and inevitably lead to throttling eventually. Offloading this heat to another enclosure can only help and means the laptop will only be handling the heat load of the CPU.

Nice video, unfortunately you left out the benefits of putting GPU into an external case isntead of playing on a overheated laptop that risk getting throttled and sounds like a vacuum cleaner because it's struggling to keep the temperatures under control.
Sure some laptops can deal with heat better than others, but when you game during summer, having a eGPU really can make a huge difference.

ROG XG mobile, in my opinion, is an awesome idea. It practically solves the bandwidth issues over Thunderbolt but being a proprietary solution you can expect very few options and low adoption rates.

This laptop has generally received poor reviews because the 4 core cpu bottlenecks the on board graphics, so it seems likely that effect will be even worse with an egpu.

You should probably check your power options on the laptop when using the eGPU with an external monitor. Force high performance in Nvidia control panel and make sure Windows is running in high/max performance mode.

If it's intel and without dedicated graphics the way drivers are egpu is a must if its amd not so much. Intel drivers are a mess though Decembers update improved a lot it's still got a lot of work.

Had the same problem with a coworkers gateway laptop at work. Came with an Intel CPU with an Nvidia GPU and for some reason would run slow as dirt on the eGPU enclosure. The HP version of the laptops (everyone else had) with the same CPU and same GPU ran perfectly fine. IT believed it was some sort of power saving option where the computer would default to the internal GPU even when disabled. They proved it by disabling the iGPU on an HP and the same gateway laptop but the HP laptop showed no display while the Gateway ran just fine. Disabled or not, Windows was using it.

I think there are two situations that the egpu could be useful. One is like what you said, when the laptop doesn't have a dedicated gpu. And the second, when the next-generation 40 series or 50 series GPU come out, it could be a good option to buy one instead of buying another brand new laptop/computer, especially this gen intel CPU has improved a lot. Of course, with the newer version of thunderbolt support if needed. So, it's not a good timing to buy egpu set up for this moment if you are already using a 30 series gpu.

Excelente vídeo, Roberto. 😉

best combination is getting a industry grade Think pad which has best of everything except it doesn't have a gpu . and then get the external gpu

Just ran same benchmark with an inbuilt RTX 3050ti inbuilt with a 12g intel i7 12700h and got 7689. Your doubling that so there must be a sweetspot for external GPUs

I appreciate this review. Im running an MSI i9 with 2080 super gpu. Stuck on upgrading to a new laptop with 3080 atm. I do think the primary advantage of eGPU is 0 throttling in regard to laptops and heat management.

Im on a MSI 3080ti 16gb (which is enough to play all games on max) but I’m also doing 3D edit and animations which makes rendering take days with just one GPU.. so my question would be would it be worth it to buy this or just to get a desktop?

Thank you for the video. What about running the eGPU with a VR headset?
