Weithin von Würzburg sichtbar und über allem thronend, steht die "Festung Marienberg". Schon im 8. Jahrhundert wurde die Marienkirche auf dem Marienberg errichtet, sie ist die älteste Kirche von Würzburg und kann im inneren Burghof der Festung besichtigt werden. Die Festung ist von vielen Befestigungsanlagen umgeben, u.a. dem Maschikuliturm. Dieser Turm wurde von 1724 bis 1730 von Balthasar Neumann erbaut und gilt als eines der bedeutendsten Einzelbauwerke von Festungsanlagen in Deutschland.
Einen besonders schönen Ausblick auf die Altstadt von Würzburg und die vielen Sehenswürdigkeiten hat man von der Ostseite der Festung. Anbei einige Impressionen von dieser besonderen Festungsanlage.
