CLIP DESCRIPTION:
In his last minutes of life, Dr. Yuri Zhivago (Omar Sharif) thinks he sees Lara (Julie Christie) on the street.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
Based on the Nobel Prize-winning novel by Boris Pasternak, Doctor Zhivago covers the years prior to, during, and after the Russian Revolution, as seen through the eyes of poet/physician Yuri Zhivago (Omar Sharif). In the tradition of Russian novels, a multitude of characters and subplots intertwine within the film's 197 minutes (plus intermission). Zhivago is married to Tonya (Geraldine Chaplin), but carries on an affair with Lara (Julie Christie), who has been raped by ruthless politician Komarovsky (Rod Steiger). Meanwhile, Zhivago's half-brother Yevgraf (Alec Guinness) and the mysterious, revenge-seeking Strelnikoff (Tom Courteney) represent the "good" and "bad" elements of the Bolshevik revolution. Composer Maurice Jarre received one of Doctor Zhivago's five Oscars, with the others going to screenwriter Robert Bolt, cinematographer Freddie Young, art directors John Box and Terry Marsh, set decorator Dario Simoni, and costumer Phyllis Dalton. The best picture Oscar, however, went to The Sound of Music.

CREDITS:

When I saw this masterpiece with my mom we were shouting "Turn arround! You idiot!!" and then crying our eyes out. Its one of our favorites. Really miss her...3 months last time I could hug her and my dad because of the Covid.

David Lean was a master at 'the visual echo'; note how this scene is consciously constructed to repeat Zhivago and Lara's 'first meeting': young Zhivago runs for the tram, boards, bumps against Lara [sparks on the overhead wire!]. They sit and gaze out the window.Their heads turn simultaneously as they watch a girl - the life force - running down the street. Here the dying Zhivago's head again turns to watch - only this time it is his life force herself...he gets off the tram...attempts to run but...and so brilliantly is it built that even though we see Julie Christie's face, WE'RE not sure its really Lara or just our own hallucination.

As for Sharif - he was never truly appreciated for his central contribution to this film: he achieved what Lean asked him to do - to underplay Zhivago - to make US Zhivago and see through his eyes this panorama of characters, events, and emotions. It's good to see so many comments from those who understand how grad his performance really is.

Some years back I met an elderly lady from Russia. Her parents had lived through the Revolution. I asked her whether it was anything like Dr. Zhivago and she said "worse".

I remember this as one of the first films I saw with a definitively sad ending, not ambiguous or mysterious etc, it still hits hard

He comes in contact with her on a trolley at the beginning of the film.  Now he is on a trolley and she is walking outside the trolley but he cannot and does not reach her. Great story telling.

Seen this movie many times. Just now noticed the symbolism of Zhivago collapsing next to the supposedly triumphal statue of the USSR. David Lean was a master of his craft.
