Widgets and Wonders - Rustoleum DEAD FLAT

Pandemic time has led to a run on not just toilet paper, but my hobby supplies too! In search for a replacement for my beloved Testors Dullcote, I've discovered a new clear topcoat that I'm falling in love with; check it out!

Rustoleum 2x Matte Clear is all I've ever used. Great finish and never had a paint reaction. And it's easy to find here in the US.

Been using this stuff for a few months now. No issues with anything Ive coated. Seems to be pretty durable also.

I have a crap ton of mdf terrain that I want to clear coat to make the paint job more durable for club use, gonna have to try this!

FYI, there is an Universal Clear in both dead flat, gloss and two other colors. Guess you should make sure you are buying the dead flat.

Rustoleum has a lot of good primers too. And crylon makes a spray primer specifically for foam for anyone making terrain.

Thanks for the video, Ash. While I am pleased with the results I have been getting, using " Army Painter" clear flat, my can is just about finished. I don't know if I'll be able to get another, and I have a " Michael's " a five minute drive away, so I may try this Rustoleum product sometime soon. I have heard that the " frosted glass " spray works very well, also, though I haven't met anyone who's tried it.
I stopped using the Testors clear coats about 15-20 years ago when a particularly thick application of gloss coat ruined my Tamiya acrylics paint job on a plastic aircraft model I was building. Learned a hard lesson. ie: multiple THIN coats, not " get er' dun in one"

Rustoleum Frosted Glass is available at Walmart and most DIY/hardware stores. I love it. I think it might actually be Dull Coat in different packaging.

Just a heads up that many spray varnishes take time to fully set, up to 24hrs, and can appear glossier at first.
Always read those instructions, check the weather, and have patience!

Same situation and I just picked up some Liquitex - Soluvar matt varnish and some W&N - general purpose matt to give them a try. I’ll definitely keep my eye open for the Rust-oleum.

Excellent tip! I have a ton of 3d printed terrain to test it on. For those in the USA, it is available at Home Depot. Search "All Surface Dead Flat Clear Topcoat Spray Paint" and see if it is at the store near you. I have to go today to pick up plants so will swing by the paint section and grab a can

My goto (favorite) matte varnish is Vallejo Decal Fix shot through an airbrush. Thin it a little. Its very cheap. A little goes a long way. I find Spray cans to be overkill and wasteful on minis, and much more apropriate for large pieces, like vehicles and terrain. For individual minis I prefer the Decal fix and airbrush method.

I used the Rust-Oleum Clear Matte. Worked pretty well in the past but the other week I was sealing my Guard Kill Team and it frosted pretty badly in some spots. I think it might have been user error. Temp and humidity was fine but it was a little windy so I think I overcompensated by spraying too much. I'll have to give this a try

I bought some on Amazon after seeing this. Tried it out on an Ork and I can't see any difference between it and Dullcote. Works great!

Just got their matte spray Rust-Oleum 267028... it was very much simi-gloss or Always test before use!
