Right-Wing Charter Schools Erase History With Taxpayer Money

"With only 1,500 students on a small-town campus in southern Michigan, Hillsdale College is far from the power corridors of government and top-ranked universities.

But it has outsize influence in the conservative world, with strong ties to the Washington elite. Republican leaders frequently visit, and Justice Clarence Thomas delivered the 2016 commencement address, calling Hillsdale a “shining city on a hill” for its devotion to “liberty as an antecedent of government, not a benefit from government.”

Now the college is making new efforts to reach beyond its campus, this time with an even younger audience. The college is fighting what it calls “progressive” and “leftist academics” by expanding its footprint in the charter school world, pushing the boundaries on the use of taxpayer money for politically tinged education.

Hillsdale has ambitious plans to add to its network of classical public charter schools, which focus on “the centrality of the Western tradition.” And Gov. Bill Lee of Tennessee recently invited the college to start 50 schools using public funds, including $32 million set aside for charter facilities. Hillsdale’s network currently includes 24 schools in 13 states."

This is nuts. No "charter school" should receive a dime of public money, ever.

All "school choice" really means is I'm a wealthy Conservative who wants to send my kids to a private school where they won't teach things that I disagree with or feel uncomfortable about.

Private school only ensures one future for your child struggle until the day they died because they're 18 years behind everyone else

I live in a state that perpetuated the Native American genocide, but Native American history has never been mentioned in our schools. About the most students get in my state is field trips to Fort Mandan or the Knife River Indian Village, but those field trips just talk about Native American life, not really the history of the country.

I went to public schools in several other countries, and in all, we had to sing the national anthem, but only in the US did we have to do a PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE!

As a future parent I do want to send my kids to the best public school possible I want them to get the best education and become the smart children I'm not going to stand around and let the schools be destroyed by these GQP monsters

Replace the word “centrality” in the phrase “the centrality of the Western tradition” with “superiority” and you’ve got the true world outlook that underlies this effort.

I am so glad I was never a typical white person.
I was lucky to be able to come home from work go over their homework. Also, made them think outside the box. Read as much as possible and make your decision.
Also would make treasure hunts on different books they would have to search for at Barnes and noble. Then read.
I am proud that my kids are open minded to everything..

I'm about the same age as Ana, & I also went to public school. They really gloss over SO much - there is NO indoctrination to "hate America" in public school history classes, especially at the elementary level

Only in America do parents fight for their children to remain ignorant because some facts or ideas are inconvenient or uncomfortable.

We are in serious trouble if we do not fight back harder. We really cannot wait for just the federal government. It has to start at the local community boards and council members.More importantly, being pro-active is a MUST.ThevGOP is pushing hard to not just re-write actual history, but the are looking to silence the truth at any cost. This is an emergency and should be treated as such.

What the hell is “leftist” education, I went to one of the most liberal Universities in the world, and there were like a handful of what the right considers the average “woke leftist.” Their battle against crt and cultural marxism, which by the way cultural marxism was invented by the Nazis under the name cultural Bolshevism, is against an absolutely fictional entity. They’ve lost their absolute minds. Every school I ever went to was extremely neutral, including UC Santa Cruz. The people who think Jeebus Chribus is coming back from the dedz soon for the apocalypse, and who think evolution is a ploy by the devil, are now creating EDUCATION SYSTEMS. Good god this is a nightmare everyone!!!!

If we want to talk about Affirmative Action, then let's end the process of legacy admissions to all colleges! I once saw a study that about 80% of legacy admissions to the top Ivy League Universities in America are given to Caucasian students who have parents that either went to the University and/or donated (a.k.a. bribed) the University to let their kids in. If Universities in America only let students in based on merit and test scores, we'd see a lot more People Of Color get admitted into colleges. Oh, and while we're at it, let's make public college debt free for all so everyone in America regardless of their social class or background can get a higher education if they want 1 but can't afford it!

If you can't follow federal laws and federal curriculum, you don't get federal funds.

Why is public money going to these schools? Y'all need to fix that ASAP! That's part of a larger plan to eliminate public education. In the mean time, public school teachers are paying out of their own pocket for different things their students need!

Don't give up on this story, Ana. They are firmly anti-science among many other problems. This is the Devos school.

I received my primary edu in a blue state, and I can assure you that even there history was taught from a mostly rosy perspective. Couple that with a boring emphasis on "name-date" learning, history (and civics) was being signaled as something to ignore or not worry about; that our system was obviously good and headed in the right direction. In retrospect, this all seems purposeful, to keep youngsters ignorant of possibilities and of the challenges they will face "in the real world", and to dissuade them from trying to make things better. And indeed, it wasn't until after college and "adulting" began in earnest that one could see just how broken, corrupt, parasitic, and domineering our system truly is. So I would disagree that Repubs want to _make_ education a conservative indoctrination process. They want to make it _even more_ of a conservative indoctrination process. And if in so doing they can privatize yet another governmental function via charter schools, so much the better (from their perspective).

Anna, this was one of the best videos you’ve done! Bravo! You have common sense and amazing critical thinking skills. I totally agree with you on all the points you’ve made.

Remember the preacher who says "I hate math! Can somebody give me an 'amen'?"

They won't teach history. Soon, they won't even teach math.

Ana, you should totally do a segment on George Mason University. This university, which is just a few miles from the White House, has received millions of dollars from the Koch brothers to influence the curriculum, what is thought, and who gets hired. They are particularly interested in influencing law students and economic students. Professors there are supposed to push “free market” ideology, and you cannot teach anything critical of capitalism, otherwise, you’ll lose your job. Such plans by the Koch brothers create highly educated zombies who will do anything for money.

This is not the only school in which they have influence. They do it all over the country, but this particular school, because of its proximity to the Capitol, has become their main target.
