That's one thing sequel lovers say "Palpetine didn't have a back story in the OGs and no one cared."
Well yeah but that was before all of the world building in prequels. He didn't need an explanation while Snoke was set up as a mystery character who was supposed to have his back story explained. People were seriously looking forward to it.

Snoke is explained by himself and his own existence in the circular Star Wars narrative: Every time you kill the Emperor, another aspirant Emperor will emerge

Exactly. This was one of the main things for me that made me very unexcited for Episode 9. Some of my thoughts on the sequels have changed with time, but this point still makes me salty

Sequals trilogy: smoke gets impaled through the chest but is somehow cut in half.

Also sequals trilogy: Finn gets sliced in the back and is completely fine.

The fact an explanation wasn't given at the time isn't actually a problem because of the place snoke holds in the last jedi's narrative and also because to an extent you could find a theoretical explanation that would work with the rest of the star wars cannon (for example, he could've been a sith lord that had a rivality with palpatine but whom, at the time of the prequels, didn't come out on top so he hid in the shadows, bidding his time to rally the remnants of the empire when the moment was right). It doesn't matter if he was darth plaeguis or another sith lord because of the place he holds in the last jedi's narrative.

It goes with the rest of the poor world/building. This is 30 years after the fall of the Empire. The New republic should be strong and in charge but it feels like they are still the rebellion and the New Order is just as powerful as the old Empire. Adding Snoke seems to just confirm the reversion to the old status quo. What the hell was Snoke doing the past 30 years? Where did he come from? Why don’t Luke or Leia or anyone notice? Sure the galaxy is a big place but surely some spies would hear a whisper of NO activity.

Snoke was I believe if I remember correctly was cloned from Luke’s severed hand. A malformed version of Luke.

I sort disagree and agree that the status quo changed tho and also I agree and disagree that it’s because of snoke. Also snoke origins needed to be explained because of the ot and pt I think is a little unfair

Yeh but we still eventually got an explanation for Snoke, love it or hate it. Personally, I’m a big fan of what Snoke ended up being because I took issue with a bigger big bad turning up and overshadowing Palpatine, so him actually being a tool for our one, true Emperor was kinda neat.

And as it turns out… Rian Johnson never cared about The Star Wars Community. He was supposed to help defeat the Sith, not join them.
