When using EF Lenses for photography with the Lumix S5ii, there seems to be a slight shutter delay even when you're shooting with higher frame rates.

Even though both the Lumix S5ii and the Sigma MC-21 are running on the latest firmware, it seems that there's some form of a communication issue (but only when using EF lenses).

The photos still come out looking absolutely fine, but it doesn't give me much confidence when I'm out shooting and the shutter sounds like it isn't quite actuating the way it should be.

Definitely something to make a point of, and hopefully this will be resolved by Panasonic and Sigma as quickly as possible!

What do you guys think of this? Even though the results are still totally fine, would this deter you from using EF glass for stills?

I wouldn't call this a MAJOR issue, or if it is, then it just shows what a great job they've done on this S5II for this to be such a big deal.. Sounds like just a weird technical thing, as long as the shots come out normal then all good!

2 years later anyone have any update on this?

Wondering if this is still an issue in 2025.
I'm planning to upgrade the S5 to S5 II X mainly for AF improvements (wondering the AF-C is as fast as the Canons)

Hello Josh. Your videos are quite instructive. I would like to ask you to make a video testing the autofocus of the EF lenses + adapter in real low light conditions. It would be quite interesting to see the result for both video and photography.

Well I had noticed the noise of the laggy shutter but was so happy with the results and being able to use my EF lenses, AFC- tracking... great results, not a major issue to me, electronic shutter works fine.

Still impressive considering we are using an adapter and ef isn’t native. Impressed by the video performance but guess for certain photography with the ef it’s fine, as long as it’s not events or something that requires burst or fast shooting environment

Great video once again! I love the colours on your videos, you get skin tones damn right and very pleasing! Would love to see an updated colour workflow with your s5ii!! Thanks for the video!

Hey Josh, Do you know when Adobe RAW will add support for the S5ii? As of right now, LR still doesn't work.

Hey Josh, so what about S&Q mode Autofocus working with this MC-21 adapter?

It may be penalizing speed when using third party adapted lenses... is there a firmware update already maybe? Panasonic is known for updating firmware, so maybe it will be improved in the future...

i'd guess it's the aperture closing slower on EF lenses - usually you focus wide open and the lens is stepped down before the shutter opens..

I think aperture movements work a bit different on EF glass compared to Panasonic lenses. Now factor in the adapter that has to translate the protocols for that. Some speed has to get lost here. Maybe eventually there may be an adapter that can do it faster, who knows.

Hi Josh, just wondering if you were in constant preview mode when taking the pictures? Could it be that if you're not in that mode, there might be a delay while the aperture has to close down before the shutter comes down to block the sensor before opening again to expose the frame? Not sure I'm making sense here, but it could be that the adaptor would just slow that sequence down each time you take a photo. Perhaps with Constant Preview on, with the lens already being closed down to the preferred aperture there might be less of a delay (?)

Interesting findings. I hope it’ll all get sorted somewhere down the line

any update of this? we want also the image quality of native sigma L mount vs sigma ef mount when mounting them on lumix fullframe camera

Thanks very interesting. I was about to jump from my canon 5d ii to this Lumis + adaptor but now I'm not sure anymore. Did you try to actually test if the shutter speed is indeed slower ? Testing it a 1/4000 wont really show any problem (cause even if it's a bit slower, it's still very fast). But what about 1/200 ? When Panasonic fixes that, i think i'll upgrade (and it will be quite a change from my old 5Dii !!!)

Thanks for testing all this out! Bummer there are some slight issues, but still is incredible how well Eaf glass is working pretty much right out of the box!

I have a Panasonic S1R and have the canon nifty-fifty with a sigma adapter. It works the same way on my camera. I have use this combination for a year now and it always sounded that way. I thought it was a normal thing when you use an adapter with a non-native lens.
