Egyptology in an Hour

Ancient Egypt: where and when was it, and what made it the most instantly recognisable of all ancient civilisations, and the one that gets us all so interested? This is an Egyptologist’s take on what you need to know. Pyramids, obelisks, mummies, hieroglyphs, people with animal-heads standing side-on and walking like, well, Egyptians. Old Kingdom, New Kingdom, thirty Dynasties, a Kings’ Valley, a Queens’ Valley, two of the seven wonders of the ancient world, and some of its most famous names: Akhenaten, Nefertiti, Tutankhamun, Ramesses, Alexander the Great and Cleopatra, all of them pharaoh of Egypt, one of them the inspiration for a play of Shakespeare’s, another for one of Hollywood’s most famous villains. Bring your bull-whip and don’t forget your hat…

Thank you to everyone who came along to the live broadcast and for your comments and questions etc!

I chuckle every time you apologize ahead of time for inevitably going over your allotted time, because I’m always surprised and a little sad when you do start wrapping up. Your talks are so fascinating that I am never ready for them to be over! Thank you for doing them and bringing us so much interesting information and photography!

I have only just found your lectures, and I am addicted to learning more about Egyptology, a subject in which I have always been interested in but have found difficult to understand, I think because one is expected to have basic knowledge, up until coming across your lectures I have really struggled with. Thank you so much for explaining a lot of the beginnings of the subject in such a way I am able to understand

Hello! I graduated in anthropology and I think I’m going to get my masters in archaeology! It’s so much harder in the states it seems than the uk to get into archeology but it would be a dream to have you or Joann fletcher as my professors! If only! Good luck in your endeavors:)

We all knew it wasn’t going to be an hour and we're here for it!

Well done. I appreciate the difficulty of your presentation as you condensed ancient Egyptian history in a general sense while bringing specific aspects of interest into sharp relief. It would be too easy to disappear down a rabbit hole.

Hey Chris, i reached out to you previously, but perhaps the email got lost somewhere in the spam.
My name is Leonardo Marchesi, i am an italian architect and ancient egyptian enthusiast, in fact like many italian architects before me.
I came across your channel and later on bought your wonderful book which mostly show how passionate you are on the subject, thank u for transmitting your passion in such a powerful way.
This being said, on my slowly growing youtube channel i talk about ancient egypt in a very beginner way, now i am studying the great pyramid of Giza after almost 2 years spent studying Abydos and Saqqara, it will take me a long time to reach the time of Cleopatra.

I'd really like to have you on the channel for a podcast, but i don't think i am ready at the moment, cause i have a lot of questions that i'd like to make to an established archaeologist, nothing about conspiracies and this sort of things, just open questions, it would be a privilege.

But not for the time being, i have a lot to study and i want to make sure when we talk to have a more powerful background ;)

Hope you will soon write another book ;)

Thanks for the fantastic show. I am newish to this and I am curious if you have plans to do any episodes on the old kingdom creation story of Atum and the Heliopolis ennead? Also perhaps on how solar and even lunar worship and calendars evolved?

Dear Professor Nauton, Thank you for your video. It was very informative. an you suggest reputable tour companies that tour historical Egypt? My father flew raids as an American Army Forces pilot during WWII and told many stories of his time chasing Rommel in North Africa and his time in Egypt. I would love to travel in his footsteps but I do not know of a tour company or companies that provide the most informative tour. Thank you for considering my request. Diane

Great live lecture Chris, thank you . Sadly I couldn’t join you live but watched the recording. Love your work 🇪🇬❤️ My sister & I are visiting Egypt on an Egyptologist led tour for the first time ever next November (2024) to celebrate our 50th birthdays, after we fell in love with Ancient Egypt as children in the early 1970s thanks to our paternal grandparents introducing us to Ramses the Great.

Thanks for a most entertaining and informative lecture. I'll catch up on the bits I missed, due to the oppo calling from the office, later, as "His Lordship" has woken up and decided it's playtime.
