Vision is one of the most powerful members of Marvel's Avengers. As an android (or synthezoid), he showcases incredible levels of strength, skill, and reason. However, Vision is different than most robots from science fiction in that Vision has the capacity to feel emotions. He can cry and get angry and feel love for his teammates — especially Scarlet Witch. But are his emotions real? Can Vision real feel feelings the same way we humans do, or is he simply faking it all? And more importantly, if we can't tell, is there a difference?

Every Wednesday, Comic Misconceptions explores the incredible stories, fascinating ideas, and mind-blowing theories regarding comic books and the rich history and culture that surrounds them!

Vision is a superintelligent AI. Honestly, he's probably a better human than most of us

I've been wanting to do a video about whether or not artificially intelligent life is still life since last year. The first Vision video I did was almost this, but I panicked and made something else instead. It's a complicated subject, and I'm definitely not smart enough to answer all the questions, but hopefully this video at least starts an interesting conversation!

Well those emotions might not be real but he still has that 20/20 vision

I always appreciate when The Vision is talked about in a video. He's been my favorite hero since my childhood due how complex he his overall.

This is one of your most Idea Channel-esque videos (and I mean that as a huge compliment!). Also, your new set is getting better video-by-video, man.

Fun fact smack in the face:
Vision has been a part of an Avengers team ever since he first joined. This makes him the Avengers who has been on the team for the longest time, surpassing Iron Man, Hawkeye and even Captain America

From a pragmatic standpoint it does not matter if Vision actually has emotions or if he just acts as if he does. It comes back to the consciousnesses question no one can prove they are conscious not even to themselves because we currently don't know what consciousnesses is.

But the Turing test has nothing to do with whether or not a machine consciousness or feels but with intelligent behavior. The point is that for computer science doesn't matter if the machine is conscious or have feelings. For the artificial intelligence, intelligence is the ability of a machine to perform as good as a human (or better) in some specific task, such as natural language, visual recognition or convincing another human that you are also a human.
Let's say i'm a master puppeteer so skillful that my audience is convinced that the puppet is actually feeling sad or joy while i'm moving it. Does it mean that the puppet is feeling things? or, Does it imply that I'm having those feelings while I move the puppet? and if I create a gear system in order to move the puppet with the exact same patterns of behavior ... does that behavior imply that gears feels?
I believe, the answer is probably "no" because the feelings and consciousness have more to do with the internal flow of information inside a system than the behavior. Still in which point you could say some system is "conscious" I really don't know.

Actually the whole thing about the physical spiritual mind, we have discovered that physical things can affect the brain and then that affects the mind, true. *However* we have also long known that changes of the mind, (IE, strong emotions, mental trauma) can have a direct impact on the brain and the body as a whole. This means that we know the two are indeed directly linked, but it is possible that the mind is both physical AND spiritual, not just one or the other (and currently it's not certain if we can even prove which is true). If that is true, but Vision's mind is physical, then he is not the same as humans.

Based on that and on the other differences, I believe Vision *is* conscious...but not in the same way as humans are. And as we know, humans are a self-centered race, so if Vision functions differently, most are going to consider that as functioning *inferiorly*.

Humans fake feelings all the time but does that make them any less human?

I do believe that vision's emotions are genuine. After joining the avengers, he was not shown to be an infiltrator. What difference does it make if emotions are from a human being? Those who would oppose are saying only humans can emote. So if love is love, then it doesnt matter whether it is a synthezoid or human?

I'm a comic book fan and a philosophy major and I absolutely love these kinds of conversations. Great video!

Also, that Moon Knight poster on the wall back there is awesome. He's my favorite. More Moon Knight videos, please!

This video reminds me of ST:TNG season 2 episode 9 "The Measure of a Man", where Captain Picard and Data must defend Data's rights as an individual or be declared simply property of Starfleet.

This is one of the best videos I've seen you guys do lately, very convincing arguments, really interesting stuff.

(for the record, I much prefer the topics you guys do that focus on philosophy and theory, as opposed to ones that boil down to something as arbitrary as what is or isn't canon across source material).

we learn/pretend things to communicate things too, like saying "ouch" without thought, whether something genuinely hurt it was merely registers as "should have hurt" to slightly unpleasant.

Well what's to say he isn't feeling like us even if it's just code, what's there to prove that we aren't just organic robots that follow our natural code that is instinct.

What about sociopaths? They're notoriously good at making people think that they're just normal, healthy people. So if they can fake emotions well enough, according to this video, their emotions are real in which case they aren't sociopaths?

I think that our understanding of the "soul" is really just humans trying to understand the complex and sometimes illogical facets of the human brain, and the reason we feel uncomfortable with robots being considered humans is how their complex circuitry still isn't on par with the human brain, it's just doing a good imitation of it. there's a threshold somewhere that we can consider to be "human enough", but we haven't found that just yet.
