In this video, I discuss the medical abbreviation “AC”. I discuss its meaning and provide an example of a medication that you would want to administer before meals.

An example of a medication that you would give before meals, is levothyroxine because levothyroxine is the generic form of Synthroid and it is a thyroid medication and it's extremely sensitive to food intakes. If you take levothyroxine with food, it decreases the absorption of that medication. So that's why a lot of times in the hospital, you'll see levothyroxine scheduled for around 6 a.m. And it's important that you give it before meals at the time that it's scheduled so that these people are getting the therapeutic effects from levothyroxine. If you give it with meals, decreased absorption, and then it's not going to be as effective.
