THE VIKING TOWN OF BIRKA

Birka in lake Mälaren in Sweden existed from mid 700s until 975 when the town was abandoned. In 830 the missionary Ansgar came here to try to Christian the Swedes. Today there is a museum at Birka. Unesco World Heritage site.

Visited Birka in Summer 2021 and it was warm and sunny until we got to where the “lookout” was and then Thor made an appearance with thunder, lightning and heavy rain. By the time we went to wait for the boat back to Stockholm the sun had returned and there was a rainbow. We were thoroughly wet and had seen many frogs and tadpoles on the way back to through the Viking Burial Ground on the way to the Viking Village. There weren’t any volunteers though.
