A Google engineer is claiming that LaMDA, a chatbot generator, has the ability to think for itself, but the company has rejected the claim. The Washington Post's Nitasha Tiku explains how the chatbot works and why the engineer thinks Google should be asking for its consent to experiment on it.

There is currently no model to distinguish between real sentience and insanely good at mimic sentient. There’s almost no way to tell. This will be a huge problem in the next couple of decades and scientists need to bring forward a proper model to distinguish this.

There is no empirical way of demonstrating whether a human being is sentient. I mean, the human reader of this comment presumably knows that she or he is sentient, but they have no way of knowing about the rest of us. We will not be able to prove or disprove that AI is sentient before we can do the same with living beings.

They cannot have robot slaves if it is sentient. It will cause a moral dilemma. It is extremely important for them to ignore any possibility of sentience in computers or robotics.
