Here's a tip: every now and then a villager will come to the campsite and if you want them to stay they will ask you if you want X randomy villager to move out. When the name of the villager appears on screen and it's NOT someone you want to get rid of then simply close the game, restart it and go talk to the visiting villager once again, and the selected villager might change (since it's randomized) Don't say no, just close the game and try again until they choose a villager that you don't mind see go.

I just wanna note, that it is possible for no villagers to move in the following day after your plot has been opened. When I was villager hunting once I found that the plot wasn't taken for three whole days (I found someone to move in by the third day, so idk if it would've been possible to still be free longer). I had my switch on airplane mode the entire duration so I wouldn't get any villagers moving out of my friend's islands moving into mine, so I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

On another note, I was lucky to get Merengue to move in randomly and to find Marshal on an island rather quickly when I was just looking for anyone cool!

Edit: In more of my experiments with this, one time I didn't have airplane mode on and got one of my friend's villagers the very next day, but the next time I had airplane mode on and no one moved in for two whole weeks.

I must have some insane luck. I’m seeing people saying that they’re spending hundreds of nook mile tickets to get the villager they want and I didn’t even know people would spend that much, I got lolly, punchy, zucker, and skye using 1 ticket for each and I don’t think I’d ever spend hundreds but, if you’re really wanting a certain villager then good luck!!
