Reason #9: they look like ornamental flowers, so you could "hide" them in plain sight in a front yard flower bed. No one would know! Super helpful video, thank you so much Kylene! ❇️🧅🧄❇️

I got a shovel full from my mom 42 years ago. It’s now grows everywhere. It literally plants itself.

I’ve had chives in several pots for 20 years. I can kill any other plant but this one. Had no idea they were that nutritious, thanks for that!

I once used the flower heads as a way to put BBQ sauce on the meat when grilling(couldn’t find my brush) worked great!

If there was a long term grid down and we couldn’t buy onions, onion seeds or starts, chives would fill the gap. It also takes two years to collect onion seeds. The seeds don’t last long either, about two years. So I grow chives year round in zone 8
Amazing in scrambled eggs and fried rice

Chives are so low maintenance. Plant once and they are with you forever! Thank you both for your wonderful videos and tips!

I planted chives in a container over 35 years ago and we are still enjoying them. Dried and green.. they are wonderful. However I had no idea how healthy they are.. thanks for that info.

Chives can certainly make bland foods taste better. I have them in my garden and I hope to never be without them.

I made my chive flower vinegar today - just steep the freshly picked flowers in white vinegar for 3 - 4 weeks, shaking regularly, then strain. Turns the vinegar a lovely purple, and has a good chive taste for salad dressings - makes a nice present too. If happy, they'll self seed around; seeds are easy to save too.

I plant both onion and garlic chives. Absolutely love them in fresh lettuce and spinach salads.

A friend of mine gave me a little plant of chives from his garden many years ago. I love them but they grew so much to the point of being invasive, especially if you have a small garden area. Last year I transferred some into pots and this year I placed the pots in the garden so bees can pollinate my tomatoes and zucchini or any other vegetable that needs to be pollinated. This week I will move the pots next to the cucumbers. 🤣😂🤣 For me it's working out wonderfully.. Love your video.. Keep up the good work.. 👍

Permaculture folks. Plant perennial edibles and don’t poison your dandelions.

OH! both chives and garlic chives sold as young plants in the stores are usually a lump of multiple plants. while you can plant it "as is" and it will spread slowly, you can also *carefully* separate out the plants, and get 8 or more individual chive plants from each pot... i tend to plant them in groups of two or three but it lets me divide a pot of chives into many areas of my garden for not much money.

they will fill in and spread slowly over time. i almost always plant some good flowers (chives or any flowers really) near the plants that have trouble being pollinated- like cucumber- to attract more good insects, so dividing up the chive plants lets me put them in many places.

oh gosh i keep thinking of new comments- im sorry for spamming your comment section... i hope at least it helps the algorithm (wince)

Thank you for helping to get the word out! As a physician, I’m just learning more about nutrition. In medical school we had no training on nutrition, it was more of a disease - Injury - Drug - Surgical approach. In my subsequent training in adult and pediatric ER, we did go more into health and nutrition, this was especially true at UCLA in their Pediatric Primary Care program. I was surprised to see that my chives made it through our Oregon weather. Now I’m learning all I can about them! I had learned to cut the flowering tops off some of my chive stalks, then recycle the hard stalks to my compost pile. I wash the flowers then, dry them with some paper towels, then I will pull the flower apart and mix it in with my salads or use them as a garnish. The flowers too can be freeze dried for future use. In light of all the literature coming out on the effects of plastics, I will store all of my products, in glass containers. I just replaced all of my wood and plastic cutting boards with glass or titanium. I’ll definitely checkout your other posts! ⚕️🇺🇸

If you add chives with salt to dry out it will make your salt stronger taste so you can use less salt
