Marshall Origin vs 1987X 50 Watt Plexi
Comparing the the real deal to the new upstart. The Marshall Plexi amp is a classic, while the Origin head is an affordable all tube amplifier. Can the Origin compete with the Plexi?
As for why I'm using the 20 watt Origin? They didn't have the 50 in the shop.

An excellent and honest review. You can really hear the difference in quality between the two. The 1987X Plexi Reissue was very full, whereas the Origin sounded thin and weak by comparison. Then again, it is a quarter the did you expect? This is really the only way to judge amps, side by side, same day, same player, same guitar, same room. The only thing I think you should have done differently, is to play EXACTLY the same guitar phrases on each amp when comparing sound quality. Great playing, by the way!! The Marshall Origin is an excellent base for a head. At $599 at Sweetwater its just a great amp. If you run a tube screamer in front and a Strymon riverside or sunset you will not be disappointed. Its a great amp outright but adding a little flavor for variety is well worth it. I solved all these amp problems with a Kemper. Done!!!! i have them all.

As an owner of a 1987x I couldn't be happier. Spending my money on an older/used Marshall 1987x was the best amplifier purchase I ever made.

I had a 1987x. I will attest to the fact it was louder then anything I have every encounter. That being said I could not use it anywhere. It was a thing of beauty to play. Feedback on command, Clean to rip your head off distortion.

Why most of the amp bloggers they are not considering the cabinet speaker (max watts) they are using for every head amp they are introducing in their blog. FYI amp head + cabinet matched up are very important to us, so we know exactly the proper cabinet speaker max wattage we're going to use for every model of amp head.

The tones coming from the Plexi I’m able to get from an Origin 50. Fact is there is a lot of room to dial in an amp with an effective eq.

I have an Origin 50H playing through a 1960B 4x12. There is no comparison to the 20 H when the volumes are cranked. Should have used the 50H for the comparison.

I don't agree that Vietnam = poor quality. Providing Marshall manage quality effectively (you can be pretty sure they will) it should sound great. It sounded like you had the tilt in the middle (12 O’clock) on the Origin whereas you were playing through the high treble on the plexi? No wonder they sound different?

Tbh the Origin still does that Marshall sound. For the price, it’s a great “stay-at-home” amp for the guy with a Plexi in the band room/tour van.

Origin seems "tubescreamish" comparing to 1987, that has to me that tridimesional sound I remember about a Marshall. A BIG "hi" to you, Elmo.
