You might not think that one city could be both cheap and safe to live in. While countries like New Zealand and Switzerland top the safest countries in the world, so do tax-friendly countries like Georgia, which are much cheaper for expats and nomads.

I'm a Scotsman living on a Greek island, I love it here, it's safe, not expensive (not as cheap as it once was but a lot cheaper than the UK) and the Greek people are nice with a lovely culture. It's a good quality of life.

I love your slogan: "Go where you're treated best..." That's exactly what almost every human being wants! New sub. Stumbled onto this channel completely by chance!

"If I had a government that took half of people's money and spent it on stupid stuff, I would not want them to leave either."
This is one of the best short descriptions of the developed West that I have ever heard. Kudos to you Andrew.

Add Vietnam 🇻🇳 to the list as well. Saigon, Da Nang, Nha Trang and Hanoi are safe, inexpensive and super expat friendly. Perfect winter getaway for us since last decade. Lots of US folks are retiring there as well.

I live in Portugal. Where I live, I leave the house and leave the doors open without a problem.
I can leave the car with the key, and no one move.

I feel very safe living in Malta. Banking is a nightmare yes and current grey listing is a hindrance if you want to start a business but it is so safe. Coming from crime infested South Africa it really is wonderful to go to bed at night and not be afraid of every sound you hear, or having to wear a panic button when you alone to alert security. That's how I lived before 😔
That constant stress in SA is not normal I only realize it now that I don't live there anymore. So I am very grateful to live in Malta and experience some normality

For the past 5 years my “winter base” is in Kuala Lumpur KLCC. Safe, luxurious, inexpensive, very friendly people, ethnically diverse, most everyone speaks English. Like Singapore but half the price...frankly, I have no reason to go to Singapore anymore. Im gonna have to check out Georgia as it sounds like another fantastic place to spend part of the year...perhaps next spring for a month.

One word of caution to anyone travelling to other parts of the world. I understand while talking about this topic of "cheap" or "inexpensive" etc. amongst fellow Westerners or people with means whom you identify with. However, be cautious about describing other people's countries or areas where they live as such. The reason many places are "cheap" to you is because they are NOT cheap to locals. Things are often priced on an economy of scale and what the standard living wage and labor rates are. Quite a few of those poeple are just getting by or possibly struggling to pull themselves and their family through the lower to middle classes.

+1 for Budapest! I lived there a couple years and I felt very safe 99% of the time, certainly more so than in many Western European countries. Prices are also lower than in Western Europe, although they have been rising a little. Living there is still a great deal though! And not to mention the cultural life, amazing architecture, food, etc!

I completely agree. I used to feel so bad when I read through these lists before. Always seeing Denmark, Sweden, Iceland as the top countries was depressing, coming from a south American country. But you're right, there are great "fine dining" experiences you can have access to for a third of what they can cost in Europe, Aus or the US.

I absolutely enjoy the content and I wanted to add a few points: the tagline of "50% tax in Western countries" applies to employees - not to businesses. if you want to keep what you earn you have to be self-employed and run your own business. All countries you mentioned as an alternative have very weak labor markets - they are not havens for employees looking for a job. Also, the pay scales are abysmal. However, running a business "from there" may make sense - depending on the business, logistics and the personal taste for risks ("beta"). Best thing to do is to visit the country multiple times and execute a simple plan: find a place to live (rent/own) or understand what it would take (speak to landlords), register a business (what is the bureaucracy like and the cost) and just enjoy the scenery and the people. You will ride on the kindness of strangers during this stage and you will like it. Based on the "feel", you can make next steps - or fold it and go where you are treated better. During the pandemic, a great first step is finding a country that will let you in because many won't :)

Yes to Qatar. I lived there a few years ago. Tax free. Free healthcare. And very safe. If you come across any form of violence in Qatar, you must be the unluckiest person on the planet.
Not quite cheap especially in terms of accommodation, education & luxury goods, but in terms of value for money, you’ll definitely get the bang for your buck for the basic necessities. Food is quite cheap even in hotels compared to other countries. Transportation is also reasonably priced. And you can definitely pursue hobbies like photography, or fitness or art, because these items are quite affordable.
The only downside is, you’ll never be a citizen there.
