Hyundai is breaking into the performance EV market with the IONIQ 5 N, but they're doing it in a way that hasn't been done before--mimicking an ICE car. The IONIQ 5 N gets a new 84-kWh battery with a range of 221 miles, but more importantly, it gets a boost in performance in terms of cooling, power, torque, braking, and more. It comes standard with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system that produces up to 601-hp and 545 lb-ft of torque typically, but can go up to 641-hp and 568 lb-ft when N Grin Boost is enabled. The torque distribution can be managed through the infotainment, as can the braking, battery temp, and sounds! The car can act like an internal combustion car, with a simulated 8-speed dual-clutch transmission, that will jerk when you miss a shift, lug when you shift too early, and sound like an Elantra N as you "rev it out." It sounds gimmicky, and like there are 1000 different ways it could go wrong, but in practice, Hyundai has nailed it. Let's go ahead and take a look.
