GoPro: Boat Backflip

Fifty years and still flipping. When things go wrong in H1 Unlimited Hydroplane boat racing they get airborne.

The boat has a canard (wing) between the sponsons at the front of the boat.  The driver controls it with his left foot and uses it to adjust the ride of the boat.  He wants to keep the boat very light on the water with as little drag as possible. You can see the wing moving at the front of the boat.   At 200 mph, the boat will blow over if he gives it too much lift.  If he doesn't give it enough, he will be too slow.
In this case, the boat launches off a roller and gets out of attitude before the driver can adjust the wing with his foot.  Thanks to the safety features in the modern hydroplane, canopy, restraint system, HANS device, air supply, etc. Jon Zimmerman was not injured in this incident.

The camera is mounted on the rear horizontal wing of the boat.  This wing is fixed and can not be adjusted by the driver.  The hot turbine exhaust passes under that wing.  If the camera was two feet lower it would definitely be cooked.
