Burpees “chest to floor”… to flop or not to flop?

Most would say flopping in and out of the pushup is ineffective… but honestly, CONTEXT matters!

If the goal is to get in reps quickly for competition, then flopping is 1000% going to be the fastest and most efficient way to get your reps done! But let’s be real: it’s not going to make you STRONGER or really help you make any gains outside of raising your heart rate.

If you want to use burpees to build STRENGTH and ATHLETICISM, you’ll need to slow things down a bit and take out the flop.

To make your burpees more effective, start by taking your feet wide! This makes it more effective to squat down and prevents back rounding and folding over each rep.

Then, for the pushup portion, try “knees on the ground” and aim down and slightly forward each rep to help you build actual strength in your pushups!

Which version is right for you? That’s for you to decide what’s important! Context matters!

Now do it!

Finally, exercise videos will not bully me into getting more reps done flopping around 😂

Thank you for taking the time to mic up your butt to catch that fart 😂

The danger would be hyper extending the spine at speed, no?

Fit pro here. And I respectfully disagree. Yes, context always matters. A good coach would say that biomechanics also always matters. But there is no context where “flopping around” is good biomechanics. It teaches the core to disengage to a hyperextending spine. Not good.

Burpees in general are incredibly harsh on the joints, and doing them AMRAP for time is an open invitation to further wreck the related joints.

Burpees, especially for speed, are a terrible idea imo. As for going slow and training for strength, I think there are superior options, but I could live with that. It would take a pretty advanced and experienced eye to coach it correctly, and is way too advanced of a move for most

In what context is someone doing burpees with the intention of not getting stronger or increase athleticism?
