Self diagnosis is not valid in itself, however, identifying symptoms and coming up with your own explenation of what it is can help get an official diagnosis. Its alright to self diagnose as long as you dont take it as if you 100 percent for sure have what you think you have.

I self diagnosed a year ago. I'm 13 and recently got officially diagnosed. I knew by the time I was 10.

The price is ridiculous, agreed, but it doesn't change the fact that a wrongful diagnosis can alter the persons view of the disorder, warp their view on reality, and add more stigma to the disorder

Its ok to speculate, but don't say "I have it" with 100% certainty unless you are professionally diagnosed, because most of the time, people are wrong

As someone with autism (diagnosed), self-diagnosis is not valid. Often with self-diagnosis there is bias as once you may think you have something it’s very easy to believe you do and also professionals are trained in the area and are highly educated meaning they have the capability to diagnose. Self-diagnosis can also lead to misinformation which just damages the perception of the disorder as a whole.

I can’t self undiagnose, what gives you the right to appropriate our disability?!

Please don’t self diagnose. Just because it’s a trend. Personally I think that you should get a proper diagnosis

The "only an official diagnosis is valid" take is also rather American centric. My partner cannot get an autism diagnosis because they would literally lose their drivers license where they're from. we've gone through the DSM criteria's for a diagnosis and they genuinely fullfill all of them, most to a higher degree than I, a diagnosed autistic person. They got an ADHD diagnosis when I kept telling them that this and that thing was a symptom of ADHD. They cannot do this for autism. Saying "I may have" does not have the same social power as "I have". Explaining a symptom does not have the same social power as "I have". They have noticed the difference in reactions they get when they ask someone to repeat something because they didn't catch that because they have issues with auditory processing and when they say they have ADHD so they struggle hearing things correctly sometimes. It's opposite to what you'd expect but people respect terms like ADHD or autism more than they respect you as a living person talking to them. People are happy to bully and mistreat the weird kid, less people are okay bullying or mistreating the autistic kid. Because that would be mean... As long as someone doesn't spread misinformation about what autism is, they're not skewing peoples perception of autism in a worse way than the perception that's already in place, aka "5 year old white kid who is obsessed with trains". Even if a neurotypical was going around making people think that they were autistic, if anything it's at least gonna give people the right idea that "normal" people can have Autism too. The "normal" people online (because the "issue" of people selfdiagnosing as autistic as a trend is a chronically online one) are closer to what we want people to perceive as autistic than what the current perception is. Gatekeeping and being elitist about it will drag us back to everyone being told they're not autistic because "they don't look autistic". I say "drag us back" despite this being the present. It is the present. It is the current society. Selfdiagnosing as autistic is the one tool undiagnosed autistic people have. I didn't get diagnosed because I thought I needed it to be autistic. I got it because I couldn't take having to explain myself to every single uninformed person to get a single inch of acknowledgement that they please just tell me directly what they want to communicate. Selfdiagnosing is 100% valid. Not on the same level as an official diagnosis is but in my eyes it is 100% valid. Autism is a spectrum. There is no proper perception of what an autistic person is except for "a person". And I can't imagine how even a fully neurotypical person impersonating an autistic one could fuck that up for us

I wish TikTok never discovered Autism. I wish it was obscure again so I wouldn’t have to put up with people who grew up perfectly normal telling me how they’re more valid than I am.

If you can’t afford to get professionally diagnosed maybe don’t say you have autism at all??? Self diagnosis is not valid.

As someone with an official autism diagnosis diagnosed by two doctors it's not that expensive autism diagnosis if you have a decent insurance it should cover all of the cost for the diagnosis and you have some of the diagnosis can be wrong but you can be diagnosed with anything and it be wrong so not really a valid argument there

I’m self diagnosed only because I’m not allowed to go get diagnosed. My friends can recognize I have autism as well as my school psychologist so I’m pretty sure I’ve got it. Also I don’t get why you’d fake it anyway because it’s not like it even gets you anything.

Accessing those resources requires formal diagnosis... often people are only formally diagnosed because they researched it themselves. But yes, some people self diagnose incorrectly. Of course that happens, how could it not, mistakes will always happen whatever we do.

it’s ok to question a diagnosis, not self diagnose. under some circumstances like not having enough money to go get tested, you can assume a diagnosis, but please don’t self diagnose because you ARE taking resources from people who need them.

It’s not about money though, that’s what you don’t understand.

I believe Self-Diagnosed people should be accept IF they're adults and they've shown symptoms through out their childhood are okay but the child claiming they're "Autistic" or they have "ADHD" mainly want attention/clout
