Easter Rockets on Chios island, Greece

Every year two rival churches in the town of Vrontados fire tens of thousands of rockets at each other across a small valley as part of an easter celebration. This "rocket war" lights up the night sky and is an amazing site to behold (and a somewhat dangerous one).

Imagine being on a city wall during a seige, for instance, and seeing from an enemy camp the same amount of rockets appearing out of nowhere in the night. Thrilling display!

If not mistaken this was a tradition started long ago so that those living under the Ottoman Empire ( Turks ) that were of the Orthodox faith and living in secrecy and fear were reminded that it was Pascha.

In America, we have a giant rabbit that leaves eggs filled with candy for kids. In Greece, they have rockets and homemade pyrotechnics that they fire at each other's churches. .... Yeah, fireworks are banned in my city. This would never happen sadly :'(
