To save you 8 min:
1. Go to your front view port (By hitting spacebar then again while hovering over front -Z pannel)
2. Select "Image Plane" (Its in the top left of your view port *4th button along*)

Thank you, I personally use pure ref but this is a lot convenient if you want to get to that exact shape you want. Especially with the sword. For me, I'm trying to make a knife

I tried importing an image plane on the -z axis, but it didn't actually become some object, it just stayed in the background. ;--;
