HP nc6120 Laptop CPU & Memory Changing Upgrading

How to change the CPU and memory on an HP nc6120 laptop. I changed out a Pentium M 1.6GHz 725 processor to a Pentium M 2.13GHz 770. Then I changed out the stock 512MB of DDR 333 (PC2700) memory to 2GB of the same memory, same CAS latency, etc. Sorry that my mic fell off my shirt half-way through, at least you can still hear and understand what I'm saying. I had to edit the heck out of this to get it under 10 minutes, hope it's still complete enough.

Great job! If I had watched your video first, I would have save much time because I tried to open the case to change the fan when all I needed was to take out the keyboard! Thank you for posting. And the picture was clear and you explained it well.

Thx, very informative and thorough. Just what I needed to know ref memory located under the keyboard. Keep up the good work.

thanks, but I almost destroyed the keyboard, pulling it out without unscrewing it first; I didn't know that there are two screws at the bottom because they weren't specially mentioned in the video.

@StreetArtillery I seem to remember that they only came with one memory module and provided the other empty bay for memory expansion. Happy upgrading!

@unknownplayer03 It's a thermal pad, got a package of them from ebay. I wanted to use Arctic Silver 5 but read that a thermal pad works better on laptops, makes a more proper and thorough thermal transfer. Cheers!

@01zizme You are absolutely correct. I was surprised to find those two torx screws were broken out of this one, meaning someone had been inside of it before me. But still, I should have left it in the video - - I had to edit this video down a lot to get it in under the 10 minute time limit on youtube. Thanks!

Lovely video:) Thanks for sharing. Gonna upgrade this celeron 1400 to a 2.13 and 2 gig mem.
Still fun laptops

@Jungelsucks He is probably right. It sounds more like you've got a lot of stuff running that you don't know about. With everything you know is running shut down, see what your CPU usage is. If it's high at that point, you need to dig deeper, into possible running background processes and etc. Lots of possibilities.

Not necessarily. You'd need to research the specific computer you're wanting to upgrade. A good first step on this is look at the manufacturer's website and see what processor "flavors" your pc came in. With that page open, then start searching forums to see if anyone's actually done it before, with what you currently have to what you'd like to put in there. Finally, then you need to decide if the upgrade is economical to you. Cheers!

@mokle999 Not necessarily but you'll need to make sure you keep your internal fans nice and clean and keep as much airflow going into the laptop as possible.

@rhblakeman You are totally correct, I am doing it absolutely the hard way in this video. Guess because I had to do so much other work on this laptop initially that when I made this video, I simply proceeded to disassemble it again without thinking it through. I'll annotate the video. Thank you so much. Sorry to have snipped at you in your first post, I apologize. Thanks again!

i also learned how the heat sink works in this video.

@elgusher169 You're quite welcome. Happy Holidays!

I would recommend thermal paste. preferably a non conductive kind for a laptop unless you are very neat with it. I usually put a dot of it and press the heatsink down so it spreads with no air and fills the microgaps. I'm not sure the temperature differences comparing the pads vs paste, but I know paste would keep it a bit cooler.

@thecworld100 I found this chart for you: cpu-upgrade dotcom forwardslash mb-HP forwardslash Pavillion_dv6000_(Intel) dothtml Good luck!

@ViajePerverso Pretty much all HP keyboards, and laptop keyboards in general come out this same way. I've never worked on an HP G61, so your best bet in upgrading the processor is to go to HP's website and see if this model was ever offered with a better processor. Those would be safe bets. Also, google around to see if anyone has already upgraded the processor on this machine. Thanks!

@MrCris739 No, different pinout and peripheral circuitry and components used.

@dslandrey Don't know. I haven't had a chance to play with any of the i3 i5 or i7 processors yet. You could look on the hp website and see if it was offered with optional processor upgrades. That'd be your best bet.
