Project Management - How to Break Down Projects

How do you plan and setup web projects, branding projects, video projects, or motion design projects? What method do you use for project management? How do you estimate how long it will take to complete a project?

In this video, Ben and Matthew go in depth into the project management system we use at Blind and The Futur. We use a process called "chunking". Where we break down a big project into small, bite-sized tasks.

Projects break down into phases. Phases break down into tasks. Tasks are completed in a weekly sprint. And milestones are checked off and locked until delivery.

We've used this method for branding projects, web design projects, motion design projects, and video projects. Anything that is client facing, and involves a pre-determined set of deliverables.

This project management system works for both big teams as well as individuals.

More on project management, team leadership + subcontracting would be amazing! You guys must have a wealth of knowledge on these topics.

This is super duper valuable! Exactly what I need right now to complete my own project, of which deadline is 5 months left, and to be honest, I can see a whole bunch of work that needs to be done and dont know where to start. This video makes things look much more easier to complete. Thank you so so much!

First off, I just want to say how awesome it is to see Chris step back to allow his team to take over content. I don't feel like Ben and Matt are offering watered down topics either; they're able to put the lessons they've learned from Chris through their own filter to make meaningful content.

Secondly, I think this is an awesome introduction to project management. I like that complex issues are broken down and there are examples to illustrate it at work. Do you guys use this same level of management or do you go more granular (listing progress percentage, like with a gantt chart) the more complex a project gets? If you guys stick to this model for complex projects also, have you had issues with transparency or accountability and how did you address them?

This was really helpful. Somehow, I managed to go through Architecture School without managing my time (guess teachers made those phases for us in weekly assigments) and now that I'm on my own, I realize I want to and need to do many things in order to get better and get a job, that I didn't know where to start, and was jumping from one task to another. I started making a tasks plan, as Chris Do suggests in the whiteboards classes about goals, and prioritize all, but I didn' know if I was overstepping by writting down tasks that would lead me to months of work. So this video confirms I'm in a good path and all I need is hard work and patience. Thank you very, very much. This videos are really usefull. You are people of LIGHT guiding us.

Such a great video. Definitely a nice way to take a project on piece by piece or bite by bite.

At 0:46 phases should break down into sprints first, not tasks aren't they?

Straight forward video, thank you.
It'd be great to see more in depth of how you break down a real project, maybe in a longer video. Even if its a concept, it'd be itneresting to see how you break task as an individual and as a team.
Totally in for a longer video.
Have an awesome week guys, thanks again.

We are accustomed to using agile management concepts and using user stories to achieve product decomposition. Then set up the project.

We use ZenTao software for agile management. Break down products into stories. Each phase of the project solves part of the story.
