Frost Flowers

In this video I discovered -- purely by accident -- a winter phenomenon known as "frost flowers" or "frost ribbons." This occurs on the very first freeze of winter, when the water retained in certain types of plant stems freezes, splitting the stem, and forcing the water out into frozen curls and sheets that resemble icy white flowers on the ground. As soon as the sunrise hits them they begin to disintegrate and melt away along with the frost on the grass.

I have heard of these and I've seen photos taken here in Arkansas. But, I've never had the chance to see them myself. I think it may be all about the timing, like so many things in photography. Very interesting video, Keith. Thanks for sharing.
