Actually, orbital mechanics are funky. If you slow down, you don’t spiral into the sun - you go into a wider orbit. You have to speed up to enter a closer orbit.

did some experiments in universe sandbox to replicate this, and it's mostly the same, but the temperature just climbs slower (temperature takes a while to change)
temperatures are somewhat livable until the last few days actually, which is also when the sun yanks the moon from us.
