Thank you for this video. It's very helpful. I think I will move from Softbank to Rakuten Mobile. I already use rakuten mobile for livestreaming, but I want to keep my phone number, so I think I'll use the pocket wi-fi when I'm outside and use the smartphone sim, just for phone calls and emergencies. Thanks!

This video was EXACTLY what I was looking for, as I'm moving to Japan on a working holiday visa for a year, literally less than a week from now. I really like the sound of Rakuten's plan that you mentioned, I just really hope that they offer eSims with the deal, since my phone is eSim-only. I saw on your chart that there was no "physical and esim" option so I'm assuming that they offer both

Great video, got a lot of good ideas for what to expect when getting a sim card in japan. Can you also make a video or even just a spreadsheet regarding the internet providers, if possible with information about the quality of the service and any potential discounts when using sim card from the same provider.

Keep doing the good work.

As a tourist, getting a SIM, regardless of type, with voice and data is extremely difficult in Japan. They all require a resident certificate and a passport to sign a contract, which is extremely unfriendly to short-term foreign visitors. There are basically no prepaid SIMs with both voice and data at a physical store. I got an eSIM before coming to Japan so I thought I could leave the airport without getting a physical SIM until I realized how difficult it was to get by without a local number for foreigners. Exactly how can get a SIM, regardless of type, with voice and data as a foreigner beyond the realm of an airport?

I tried applying for a Rakuten Mobile and I believe only Japanese and permanent residents can apply. I have a US passport and have a house in Tokyo, do you know if I can get a Japanese phone number? thanks in advance.

Does Rakuten work for short-term international students (6 months)? Because in their application process, they are asking for documents that I don't have as a foreigner.
