Seiko 6105-8110 AKA The 'Captain Willard'

In this episode, Cam talks about the iconic Seiko 6105-8110 AKA the "Captain Willard" The 6105 series replaced Seiko’s original professional diver, the 62MAS, in 1968 and was produced until the year 1977. The 6105-8110 was the first Seiko diver to use an asymmetrical case and integrated crown guards which can still be seen in the modern Seiko Professional divers today which makes the 6105 an icon. If you have ever owned a vintage Seiko Diver then you will know that the build quality and finishing of the Seiko 6105-8110 is exceptional, and without a doubt definitely on par with dive watches of the same period, like the Omega Seamaster 300 and the Rolex Submariner!

Got an 8110 circa '77 from the ship's store(USN)for about $75. Wore the s*** out of it. Still have it and it still runs! Nutty how much they're worth now. I have an Addiesdive knock off that is actually quite nice and authentic looking. Has the same heft.

Very nice Cam, I see yours has the horse shoe case back, I have one with the later case back from 1975, it’s all original and in perfect working order unfortunately mine has the black lume rot that you speak of, having said that I must say the second I pick it up it starts running and the precise feel I get through the crown when setting date and time is as good as any vintage Rolex or omega from the same period and although it has a ton of miles on it (I can tell by the excessive wear on the lower mainspring arbor) it keeps great time and it hasn’t been serviced since the 80’s. Respect for vintage Seikos ✊🏼
Cheers mate.

Well done review!
I found a 6105-8119 from Sept. 1976, who had been unloved. A stay with (1 of) my Horologist(s) remedied her every ailment.
She too has an Uncle Seiko (period correct flat tire) strap, and a Klein Vintage Watch crystal.
She's glorious again now!

Hey Cam- glad you reviewed the 6105! I love this watch; I just picked up a SRP779 this spring.

I think the price of a 6105 in the early 70's was around $100. I was around then and I'm here to tell you that $100 in the early 70's was not cheap! The price was a hefty chunk of a guy's monthly pay back then. Officers are probably the only servicemen that could really afford one.

I wanted one of these in the worst way. But the fakes, frauds and inflated prices kept me from picking up an original. I had a SteelDive for a time and ended up parting with it. Then I got a 6105 reproduction from Rdunae. It’s not a carbon copy but it’s darn close. The crown is updated to a screw down system, though it’s still engraved with the “lock” marking. The crystal is double domed sapphire and is beautiful. The bezel is unidirectional and includes a recessed lume pip and aluminum insert . The lume is outstanding and the watch runs about +7 a day with an NH35. I replaced the strap with a 19mm Uncle Seiko and absolutely love it. I actually find myself wearing it more than my Seiko King Turtle. They are very similar, but the homage wears just a little better. Go figure.

I just picked up a JDM Seiko SBDC109 “Willard” from Gnomon, and although it’s not the original vintage watch, it’s still beautiful!

I have recentlyinherited one of these that needs a little love.
Any suggestions?
I don't plan to dive or even subject to water.
Any help will be appreciated.

What?! As far as I know, we say Omeyga down here in goanna land. Not Omeega like Mr Bond once pronounced. Super cool watch man, love to get one, and I really want a Godzilla too!!

At the time this watch was originally in production and the imperial (feet and inches) system was in use, a 19 mm strap would have been a 3/4 inch strap. I'm not sure when SI units became de rigeur, maybe the late 70's.

PSA - I would advise potential customers to steer clear of this retailer. Please note they have incorrectly listed two out of three 6105's on their website that have already sold. One clearly has a complete aftermarket handset (read - FAKE, not OEM, not factory, not even Seiko). Yet the listing reads:

"The original tritium hands match the dial perfectly and exhibit no lume loss or degradation under U.V. light inspection. The "stoplight" sweep seconds hand could be a later service replacement but we chose to leave it with this example as we felt it accented the dial and the hands nicely!"

Another listing clearly has a fake bezel insert, yet the listing reads "The bezel retains its factory deep black finish and retails its luminous filled pearl."

These guys are a joke

Edit: on further review, one of their 6105's not only had fake hands, but a FAKE dial as well. Description on their website describes it as in "beautiful vintage condition with light signs of aging."

Your presentation is like the third or fourth I see about the captain Willard in which a comment is made how soldiers would buy these at the station PX but never really talk about why go into the real reason which was because the Hamilton, Benrus, or Bulova issued watches sucked in the jungle environment with their limited 50 meters water resistance spec.

Nice video. I've been wearing my 6105 all week. 👍🏻. Pics on tunokies Instagram. The watch is also known as the Naomi Uemura in Japan after the famous explorer.
