I think in real life, this shortcut would have been discovered after a few days, or even by an accident.
To fix this, I think the movie should have made it clear that even participating in this race is very expensive, so people can't afford to try things like starting backwards.

this stage is an example of movie logic.
in real life it would've been completely impossible to take 5 years for this.
when any game comes out people immediately try to break it in any way possible, they aren't aware of speedrunning.

bug that somehow makes you 2x faster, going through walls, teleporting to the end of the game? they'll find it.

going backwards would've took 5 minutes max even by accident.
also its actually common that going backwards in a specific way does something crazy in racing games

I know they had to cut the key finding down, but someone would have figured this out in less than a week without any hints. People do anything to stress test a game like this. The book made much more sense.

For those saying this would been found in real life in a matter of days. Games right now don’t have actual consequences upon death like this one does. Halliday also said, “put the petal to the metal” which means you have to go really fast backwards into seemingly a brickwall to trigger the event. If you did that in this game it would zero you out and total your vehicle which has real world consequences. No one would actually being behaving the way they currently do in present video games In a world like this one. Respawning is far more difficult than just clicking restart like we do today.

So in 5 years not a SINGLE person tried driving backwards? In a world where games can be speedrun in minutes due to trial and error, it’s unlikely not one person would have tried to test shortcuts

Many years ago I found a bug, a big shortcut in Mario Bros 3. Using an alternate console similar to Nintendo, a joystick with a special button "turbo", to boost the performance of the player, I jumped from first world to final world, without play the rest of the scenes or stages. At final, I can defeat Bowser and Win the Game. All the games have shorcuts.

I think they only way to actively make this make more sense from a 'game' perspective. because 100% chance someone would have gone backwards at some point surely.
You have to have seen that small part where Haliday said to go backwards, and that activates a flag on your account that enables the reverse door to open.
Like you can't give the puzzle the answer, you /have/ to do the puzzle even if you know the answer.
