Thank you! This worked perfectly and likely saved my daughter hundreds of dollars on her 2003 New Beetle Turbo. Here's what I think caused this: My daughter recently bought the car (73K miles), but it only had one key. So we went to a locksmith in San Francisco near where we live and they cut a new electronic key for us for around $100. I used that new key the other day to start the car and it konked right out, just like in this video with the same combination of error lights on the instrument cluster. I believe that the car's computer recognized this new key as non-factory and turned on a kill code assuming it was an attempted theft. Disconnecting the battery removes that kill code so the car starts right up (using the original key). I then tried to start the car again with the new key and it konked out again. This time, after only one or two starts with the bad key, I didn't have to reset the battery. The Original key starts it up fine now. So I think a bad key is one of the causes of this issue. In any case, this video was a huge help, so thank you!

Thank you so much Daniel for posting this YouTube video how to fix this issue on 2002 VW Beetle. I had this issue a few years ago in California and I had to tow it to a shop and cost me over $100. And now I live in Canada and it happened again last week. I almost thought I had to tow it to a car shop again. Fortunately this time I search on Google and found this video. It really worked. I don't know exactly what happened but at least it solved the problem even though it might be temporarily. I am happy and thank you so much again!!

thanks for the info, , , , hauled vw home, found your video, got it started, , will be carrying a 10 mm socket in car as standard equipment .(update 3 days later) yes, , , this trick started car, but the real problem was the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor that had to be replaced. It was original black one and replacements are green . Only $18 and if you watch the youtube and be easy you can do it yourself very quickly.
