Why are the ancestors (egwugwu) often seen as frightening or even malevolent? It's interesting that, at least according to this book, the Igbo people (and the Yoruba with their egungun spirits) feared the spirits of their ancestors as much as they admired them and were in awe of them. They also take on really bizarre, abstract appearances. Anyone got anything to help me understand?
