A Nigerian senator, Ike Ekweremadu, was found guilty in a London court on Thursday for trying to have a young man's kidney removed last year for a transplant to his daughter.

In addition to the 60-year-old senator, his wife Beatrice, 56, and a doctor who acted as a go-between, Obinna Obeta, 50, were also found guilty of conspiring to bring the young man, from Lagos, to the UK to have his kidney removed.

The couple's daughter Sonia, 25, was cleared.

The influential senator, a former deputy speaker of the Nigerian Senate, and his wife pleaded not guilty, as did their daughter and the doctor, at the opening of the trial which caused a stir in Nigeria.

The sentences will be handed down on 5 May. They face life imprisonment under the Modern Slavery Act. Under the Act, they were formally charged with conspiracy to arrange for the travel of a third party for exploitation.

Nigeria as a country needs some cleansing....

It’s a crime, everywhere in the world.

Even in Nigeria it should be a crime to harvest organs without informing the doner that his organs would be harvested. Informed consent must be obtained. This was clear abuse and taking advantage of someone's ignorance. There should be no sugarcoating this just because we have respect of someone in our community. We shouldn't justify crime.

No matter how humble&compassionate you put it, The ekweremadus case is kharma.Medical tourism has to stop.Imagine! Not even a single member of the family stepped up to donate.

There are a lot of Ekeremadus in the Senate etc. They call them lawmakers. Unfortunately, they are lawbrakers, this is why he was bold enough to come and break the UK laws. They have broken every single law in Nigeria. The wrath of God will continue to decend on those elites who have turned Nigeria upside down. UK.

He is not respected. Thieves are not respected. They should not. They should all rot in jail! They messed and stole Nigeria dry. Did they show the same fight and desire they showed towards their daughter to building a single world class or even decent hospital in Nigeria? They explored nothing good. Way before hand, they should worked hard to install a good system in Nigeria. Also, they should not jump the line. Where did he get all that money from? I hope their daughter is fine, but as for the parents, they should rot in jail!!!

Marayo, I truly respect you as a host, but to call a man who was a senator for over 20 years, highly respected is a shame. All he did was steal public fund for his family.

Is really a shame in this country that dishonorable people will be referred to as honorable. If ekweremadu had been humanitarian enough to build a kidney hospital here in Nigeria this would have been averted. Is a shame

Such an unintelligent take on a serious issue. 😲

Seem you all don’t understand how bad the senator’s situation is. Even in Nigeria it should’nt be encouraged because people can sell their body parts due to poverty. Is it fair though?

Congratulations to Nigerians one evil down. I don't know what morayo is saying but what's wrong in them being jailed. So madam Tope thinks it's fine, don't forget that they lied that the boy is their family member and not as if it's just money. You ladies are giving me the vibe that you are very criminally inclined. Should the Ekweremadus not double check how things work what about the doctor?. How are you sure this is the first time . This is why the young lady was killed in the BR T and nothing is done. . He should have brought his daughter back to Nigeria a. This man has more money . To call him honourable is disgusting. Abeg give them many years . because there are still many like them harvesting people organs. Which community, why not stop deceiving yourself. Why pity the daughter do you know how many daughters of Nigerians has died. The only reason people collect money for their parts is because these thrives has wesponised poverty.

Would Nigeria have given that boy after care? The operation could have gone wrong and he could have died

When the victim was versed on the complications of the surgery he withdrawn consent and then they maltreated and bullied him, witch can be seen as forcing somebody for their body parts.

In the UK, genuine family members can donate kidneys to family members. I have a friend whose sister donated her kidney to her in the UK, not everyone needs to wait on the queue. If Nigeria makes it okay to sell body parts, this can lead to people being killed for body parts alongside a vibrant market where vulnerable people will be taken advantage of. Also, if we think it is okay to sell body parts, then it may become questionable/debatable as to why for example a prostitute should be
vilified for selling her body. Legalising or normalising the selling of body parts can open a huge can of worms.

I don't understand how and why you ladies could justify what the senator did in the UK would be OK in Nigeria?

Please remove that guys face from your thumbnail. The UK is trying to protect him, and you are exposing his face.

What you ladies on ‘ your View’ are not talking about is the the cost of after care after a person donate their kidney. £7, 000 is not going to take care of a kidney donor for the rest of life of the person that donated the kidney. Our Nigerian political class and our Nigerian educated elites are just too selfish and greedy. Most of them don’t care about ordinary Nigerians

This discussion not intelligent at all. People talk nonsense until it affects them. Useless politicians, buhari has health challenges for 8 years, never built any hospital, Tinubu taking over with exact same health situation. Did the UK fold their hands, and their hospitals just happened? Why are they running there when they have health problems. 🤔
Please, girls, don't be stupid. Your position is anti-poor, the only crime punishable in Nigeria is poverty.

I thank God that I left Nigeria, just because of common £7, 000 I’ll now sell my body parts, God forbid. I can only have such conversations from £100M.
