Hi! I also had a water softener at my house, but in the kitchen there was an added faucet that had the softened water going through a reverse osmosis filter. That was the water I used for my orchids and they did very well.

Here's what I have discovered about my Sarcochilus - they do not like to be put in large pots, they seem to like to be slightly pot bound. They don't like to sit in water, I drain them well when watering. They often send roots from the middle of the stem down into the growing medium, haven't figured out why yet. I often have to cut off old growth as it turns yellow, and the plant seems to appreciate it. Some bloom, some do not - this orchid is still a mystery to me! But the flowers are so rewarding so I keep trying!

I just got a Sarcochilus myself. Excited to see if I can get it to bloom.

To anyone in Toronto, I get all my orchid supplies at Grow it All. It's a small, independent business over 20 years. Fantastic people! And their Hanging Basket Slow Release fertilizer is identical to Osmocote. ❤

Hi Dany! Thanks for the video. The sarcochilus are kind of a mystery at the moment... I still havent figure out how to grow them well so any of you video on the subject is great!

I have a water softener for most of the house’s water but also a RO system with a separate tap for our drinking water. I only use the RO water for watering my plants as I found the softened water to cause a lot of leaf crisp/burn on more fragile plants… might be ok for most orchids but my philodendrons and alocasias did not enjoy softened water.

In the Toronto area is Crystal Star Nursery. Small growers that are mother, father and daughter owned and run. They also have great orchid supplies.

Hi! We do have a softening system for our well. My orchids "survived, " but when i started bypassing the softening system and using just well water, they started thriving. In the summer i use rain water though. I live in the US, where it gets very cold, so i have to let the well water warm up first. 😅

Using water that had been softened burned the roots of most of my orchids. The phalenopsis were hit especially hard. The cold water in my kitchen sink isn’t hooked up to the softener but the warm water is. When I used slightly warmed water in the winter, it burned the roots.

We have a soft water system but it does not treat the cold water, only the hot. Also, I don't think it filters to our kitchen sink water. I use our kitchen sink water for all of my plants, including my Calatheas.

The blooms are adorable, I think my climate is not suitable for them, but I may try one to see how it does!! I just got a Zygopetalum and crossing my fingers and toes that I will be able to grow it well!

I have a water softener system and a ro system in my kitchen sink. The salt content in my water is a lot lower than before— despite having a huge tank of salt.

Oh, Danny, I just recently had to compost the mature sarcochilus I got off eBay a few months ago. It arrived a mangled mess, no thanks to the Dept. of Agriculture here in CA. I did my best to save it, but the leaves all yellowed and I found out it had lost just about all of its roots. I’m going to enjoy your repotting video while I figure out where I can find a relatively local seller of these orchids, so it doesn’t get destroyed again.

Yeah i have this orchid o water it maybe 1 every 2 weeks if i use spagnum moss i have it outside for sun from sunrise to 11a.m. they do well outside i do use mire spaghnum than wood but you see to have a goid mix. Im in florida so its like 80f right now. I have a clear plastic pot with lots of airation or use one of those black pond planters. But it should do way better in that container.

I just bought 2 sarchocilis today! They are not in bloom but one is red/white and the other is yellow! Hoping I can do well with them. Also, I have the same tray from ikea and really like it.

We have had a water softener for 25 years. I have grown African Violets, rubber trees, ferns, Xmas cactus etc. We use larger salt chunks. We have hard water in Alberta. We don’t replace faucets etc anymore.
I am not an experienced orchid grower, I made every mistake! 😂 I have been growing them off and on for about 8 yrs. Biggest problem was lack of light, old media, lack of fertilizer, etc.
I have not had salt buildup on the orchids, Phals.
I have been drinking the water since I was 40 yrs old, I do not have salt issues in bloodwork.
Try both on a couple of Phals.
Let me know if you see salt buildup. Please take a close up photo, I could be missing something.
