As well as this, many feminine nouns have come to have negative meanings - some so much that they are taboo words. Bitch used to be the feminine of dog. Wizard and Witch both derive from wisdom. As a child, I was puzzled when I read about a king having a mistress and pictured him scrubbing floors for some woman or using a feather duster. There are some words, that have thankfully become obsolete, although they were not used (as far as I know) as insults. ette
