I was a CNA for 3 months in a nursing home, and I refuse to put my 85 year old mom in one, even though she has dementia. I am her primary caretaker.

As an RN that has worked in multiple hell hole nursing homes, I can tell you, the film, “I care alot” is closer to reality than any person knows. Here in Michigan, nursing homes are preying upon individuals to confiscate their life’s wealth and work. I have seen old ladies crying and begging for building owners to not take all their homes, land, property and the collections department lady just laughs and says “ We got all her stuff” Moreover, the short staffing is done on purpose to increase the bottom line at any cost. Residents are left lying in their own filth for hours while staff runs frantically to play catch up all shift. Meanwhile, the owners sit back and count their millions.

The biggest problem with the nursing homes is that they intentionally have a skeleton crew for staff to keep payroll as low as possible. A CNA has 14 patients per CNA . If someone calls in sick. The CNA picks up more patients. A CNA can not give good health care to this many patients.

You can not afford to get get old and sick in the US. 7K to 10K a month for some of the average places. They screw you on meals too because you cant opt out of the meal plans. The food they are serving old people is also outrageous. Residents wear call buttons but no one comes for ages.

I recently visited one of the nursing homes in Phoenix, trying to find a facility for my mom. Boy! It looked so depressing. Even though the staff was around, it looked like the patients were all by themselves. There was no interaction at all. I haven’t seen a single staff member helping anyone with anything. They were just sitting by their counters dong their personal staff. The patients were all over the place moaning, yelling, crying, snoring in their chairs, etc. It’s really sad to see how they rip you off for the place, but don’t do anything to make their customers comfortable. What a shame!

You would NEVER put your children in an unsafe daycare, so why would you do that to your parents?

Nursing home took all my mother's life savings in the first two months of her being a resident.
Three years later, she died from sepsis while in their care.

The worst part is the the neglect the abuse of the patient, never put a loved one in a nursing home or assisted living unless you get a job there and see what’s really going on behind closed doors

My mom was in a nursing home, a coworker advised me to visit often, I visited every day after work and weekends unannounced and never signed myself in, after she passed they tried to charge me for an outstanding balance I refused they stopped harassing me where as I never signed anything. I would also cook some of her favorite meals such as vegetable beef soup.

I left a nursing home. They wanted all my disability money but would only give me $50 a month of it. That was a huge no.

I spent 9 months in an assisted living, i am 80 and still very sharp minded and strong, very independent, and what i saw was horriable....i was treated very well for i found out staff thought i was a plant to take down how the people was cared for, so that was a good thing...family no longer care for their loved ones, they only want us elder locked away, and most who are put in tjose homes never have family visit them...i started dojng fun things, had off and on picnic out side, played games, and lots of other things and it changed these precious people and they came to life, and no longer laying in bed or tied in chairs, and truth is, most these dear people dont even beling in these homes and famlies should be ashamed putting their elder families in these awful places...we elder@ beed to share and rent homes and live out lives, and i tried that awhile back and it was great...we all need to come up with good ideas for the elder, they dont beling in a hell hole...

As a CNA back 15 years ago when I took patients to Hospital I refused to sign any papers. We were told not to by the Agency we worked for. Thanks for spreading this important message.

I will take myself out before I agree to go to a nursing home.

Thank you for spreading the word! This is just the tip of an iceberg of greed and what has become a legal way of fleecing our elders and their relatives. Assisted living and nursing homes are ONLY about money. Caring for your loved ones is NOT their number one concern. I am done with working in long term care after almost 20 years due to my seeing first hand what these places have become.

Thank you for posting this. If you have a loved one in any of these facilities you need to visit often & at different times. Ppl that have visitors are taken care of better because they don't want to be reported. I am so sorry for the ones that never have a visitor because they are neglected. Never set a pattern for them, show up randomly.

These places are filled with scam artists. Years ago my mother-in-law was in assisted living and they tried to get my husband and/or I to sign forms that they said really didn't mean anything.I said if it doesn't mean anything, why the hell are you putting them in front of us? I can still see the stunned look on the employee's face. We got up and walked out and never heard another word about it.

My brother pays only $475 a month for an assisted living facility in South America. The place looks beautiful and includes three meals and snacks. It’s a private room and even has WiFi. I’m not sure what that would cost in the US . The employees are so warm and caring he doesn’t want to visit us.
