Russian military doctrine assumes the use of a tank as a means of breaking through the defense, so it should be light, maneuverable, fast and small, the Western military doctrine intended to use tanks to destroy Soviet tanks from a safe distance, therefore, Western tanks are heavier and larger. The Russians also suggest using ATGMs against tanks. Different tank building schools, as we say.

The main advantage of an autoloader is that it never gets tired.

For all of you who are talking about the catastrophic ammo rack explosions, that is just an old Russian/Soviet tank thing. Look at the T-14 Armata, Object 640 or Leclerc, which have blowout panels and autoloader.

The Abrams doesn't use a 105 Anymore, it uses a 120

Soviet tank:
Lightweight (40-50 tons)
Rather fast
Decent at multi-terrain
Autoloader (increased fire rate)
Less space for crew (Very cramped)
Crew sits on top of ammo due to autloader type, which was a necessity to maintain a low profile tank design
Ammo rack: Crew certainly dead or mortally injured

Western tank (Abrams as example)
Heavier (65-72 tons)
Relatively fast
Less capable at multi-terrain (suffers in softer ground due to weight)
Manual loader (One more crew member than Soviet tanks)
Surprising amount of space (Loader has the most space of the crew)
Ammo is held in the back of the turret behind blast-resistant doors to protect crew in the event of a cook off, also makes ammo more accessible to the loader for a decreased reload time compared to earlier tanks
Ammo rack: Crew survives with minimal to moderate injuries from initial impact, tank has no more ammo and is moderately damaged but is still potentially salvageable

I'll take my chances with the better survivability of Western tanks, Soviet tanks have mainly shown themselves to be the world champions in the turret toss competition

If warthunder taught me anything it’s that auto load tanks go sky high if you hit the right place

Russian autoloader means the entire ammo suppluly literally sits along the turret ring in a circle. This means that when the ammo cooks off, well, lets just say the commander gets a field promotion to cosmonaut

*The 10 second reload time of a T-80 watching the Abram's reload in 5*

Depends on the situation because the abrams will certanly pierce the t-(whats on the line) but if the russian achive to injure or kill an american operator for the americans is a big problem

A Qualified loader in the US has to be able to load in about 7 seconds, the auto loader on a T-80 takes about 7 seconds to reload, the only advantage of the auto loader is the fact that it doesn’t get tired after being stuck in a metal box all day.

Quick things to note, the Abrams uses a version of the rh 120 L/44 gun as of M1A1.

As per the claim of the faster reload with Russian auto loaders, it is not necessarily true. Standard time to PASS us loader training is 7 seconds sustained, with most crews able to manage 6-5 second reloads for sustained periods. I have spoken to one crew member on an abrams who supposedly managed a 2.7 second reload during a training. For comparison, most Russian auto loaders reload in about 7 seconds (depending on the position of the round in the carousel), with T-80s fitted with a 6.5 second autoloader.

Some more things to keep in mind is that most NATO or NATO affiliated countries who operate tanks with autoloaders (Japan and France) have reload times of 4 seconds. Last thing I’ll say is that the removal of a crewman is not always a good thing. Though you reduce the amount of crew to train, you also loose a person who can look for threats, repair the vehicle, and take over for incapacitated crew members.

Human loaders are actually faster in some cases. There is at least 1 documented instance of an Abrams destroying 3 tanks in around 10 seconds during Desert Storm

Russian autoloaders are so good that they started an entire space program for the turrets

See there’s 1 big disadvantage to having an auto loader, if that gets hit under any circumstance by a tank shell there is no hope of survival for the crew

The main advantage of an autoloader is it doubled as a propellant for the turret to reach escape velocity.

well i think abrams loader can actually load faster before he gets tired

The auto loader can also throw its turret at the enemy if it wants to

another disadvantage to an autoloader is that ammo upgrades are limited to the autoloaders size meaning you cannot make the rounds longer for more range or penetration if you use APSFDS.
