Hybrid Looking Doubtful, Plus A Big Prado Update! (2024 Toyota Land Cruiser 250 Series Price & Spec)

Running through the latest big Prado news update, including the five models, prices and specs plus issues arising with the hybrid for Australia.

The Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 250 Series is almost ready to launch in Australia and Toyota has now given us pricing and most specifications for each grade.

We still haven't seen the Australia-spec GX, GXL or VX models but we have photos of the local-spec Altitude and Kakadu grades.

Engine-wise it is a 2.8-litre 48-volt diesel four-cylinder for Australia with the same old 150kW of power or 201 horsepower.

Other markets do get a 2.4-litre turbo petrol hybrid (the i-Force Max) but numerous problems are making that engine look pretty uncertain for Australia - it tows less and doesn't save much fuel, which does not help Toyota reduce its overall CO2 emissions (important in Australia from 2025).

What are your thoughts?

Time codes:
0:00 - Prado launching soon

Thanks for sharing. If there is not likely going to be a Hybrid Petrol version of the Prado, you have saved me wasting my time waiting for it to arrive.

The grill on VX and Kakadu has killed the design! "Oh, what a feeling"

I think Toyota really dropped the ball by not having the option for the round headlights. They look so much better. The rectangular ones look like an afterthought. Rectangular light in a square hole with a filler piece of plastic beneath the light. Just looks out of place

Good video. Toyota dropped the ball on this one. Needed a modern engine. Definitely not replacing my old 150.

You'd think the engine would at least be retuned to that of the Hilux GR Sport with 165KW and 550 NM.

This is this engine everyone’s raving about in 70 series videos I’ve been seeing.

I think if I had a pick, it would be the Altitude. Although why you have to wait for the second from top model to get a rear differential, is beyond me.

Is the down under model also like the US one where you can put the car in Low without locking the center. Unlike the last one?

Can you tell me if the car has acoustic glass in the windows to reduce outside noise like the GX 550? I don’t see it defined anywhere

Just took delivery of my 2023 Prado Kakadu in Crystal Pearl with black leather interior. Was one of the last new Kakadu's available for $99, 990 before on road costs. Was stoked to get a brand new one & think it looks way better than the boxy FJ Cruiser looking 250 Prado. Another reason besides the looks is the 150l fuel tank & rear mounted spare which I'm sure is a massive positive to have for those outback adventures & road trips compared to the new 110 litre offering.

I am a Toyota fan, and i have a VX Prado already... but if i was being charged these numbers, i'd be looking at a BYD Shark or something else like a Tank 500. Price has gotta return to sanity, c'mon

Kind of feels like Toyota have a HEAP of 2.8TDs they need to off-load over the next 2 years, before eventually announcing the Iforce hybrid.

Doesn’t the 150 range all come with locking rear differential?

no Rear Locking Diff on neither VX or GXL??? current/old Prado GXL has one

Unless I missed something no version comes with 17" wheels. The best option for towing for some people, easier to match van and car wheels for spares.
VX looses the rear locking diff?

Altitude looks good as a 5 seat option, shame about the sun roof, another thing to leak rain and dust. Hope this model has a good range.

I still hope for a full diesel with two tanks for the van towers, dont know if a hybrid will have the range for outback towing.
After all they are not all just used for people movers

To me it looks like Toyota are specking these more for city use than country towing.

so comparing new Prado GXL with Everest Sport V6 for the same price, Ford looks like a clear winner for specs ... Toyota has the "new model" vibe and reliability going for it
