Where is Sir Creek and why is it disputed? | The Hindu

Sir Creek is a 96km estuary that lies between Kutch in Gujarat and Pakistan's Sindh province. It is known for its quality seafood. But it is also a disputed land. And for fishermen in the area, survival has been difficult.

Why is this area disputed?

Both India and Pakistan have engaged in multiple talks over Sir Creek. After the partition in 1947, Kutch stayed with India, while Sindh went to Pakistan. India claims the boundary should lie in the middle of the creek. Pakistan claims the boundary should lie on the eastern bank, closer to India.

I still don't understand why the government doesn't provide these fishermen with navigation systems so, they can know where they are, it's the same with tamil Fishermen.... Be in your claimed area and if others try to dispute that let the armed forces take care of that.

The fishermen from Tamil Nadu face similar problems from Sri Lanka which India says is our friendly nation. There have been deaths of fishermen, injuries and many of their boats are seized and still not returned. The Indian government must do something for fishermen to know the range within which they can fish.

Fishermen from Pakistan are in Jail in India and Indian Fishermen are in Jail in Pakistan, governments aren't gaining anything or loosing, the one's suffering the most are the people as always. Government's should atleast provide them with some sort of navigational equipment.

Video fails to mention that Rao of kutch claimed the boundary from eastern bank of Sir Creek, a Stance that Pakistan also maintains. However India claims thalweg principle which is applicable to rivers, which is clearly not the case here. Hence its disputed
