Skate 2 (doppel dance, Skate 2, V2, 1 Skate)

What is Skate 2
• Welcome to Skate 2 for beginners :also known as V2, 1 Skate, and Double Dance.
• I’m Scott Dixon, former Team GB athlete, and I’m going to teach you how to do it properly, and show you some of the most common problems novices and intermediate skiers face.
• The video has three parts:
o Part 1: Breakdown of the basic movement
o Part 2: Beginner drills to get you started
o Part 3: Common errors to be aware of, then a demonstration of 3 great solution focused drills, each with progressions through easy, medium, and hard to suit your ability.
The hardest part about the technique
• Position: Feet underneath
• Timing: Pole before you weight the non-balance leg
• Movement: Up and down each ski and correct arm/pole use
How to learn it if you are new to the technique:
• Stand on grass and clap over the ski without poles
• Repeat – duck under a pole or bar – box drill
• On skis clap drill side to side
• One skis Box drill – up, down, step, up, down, step
• Grass or static, box drill and tap
• On skis box and tap drill up pole, down, step, up, pole, down, step
At this point you may be able to get a consistent rhythm with the technique, but may be struggling to hold it for a long time. But now you have the basics, let’s take a look at how to develop this technique to a higher level.
1. Legs are too wide - generally
2. Legs in sufficiently, but stepping out
3. Poling as you step rather than the pole/step motion
4. Poling with the triceps, not the back muscles
5. Not releasing the poles
6. No up & down movement on the ski
7. Skiing on the inside of the wheel rather than outside
3 Simple drills, each with an easy, medium, hard version for you to improve step by step.
• Position - One foot balance
o Easy: Standing on one foot – poles supporting and gradually decreasing
o Medium: pushing in a straight line both feet
o Hard: Skateboard – get shot of inside of wheel and outside of wheel
• Timing Arms
o In sprinting the hands dictate the tempo – you don’t have time to go all the way back with the hands.
o Static, get the motion – fence drill pull back like a rope
o Double Pole Single Arm

Movement – Hop on Ski
o Easy: stand still and bob up and down on the ski
 Develop into a hop
o Medium: Slow on rollerskis and bob on the skis
 Develop into a little hop
 You can use your poles as supports
o Hard: Step, Hop and land with your foot and poles at the same time – then step

Hey Scott, I really want to express my appreciation to you on this video.

I got into XC skiing last Winter and fell in love with it immediately. So this Summer I bought myself a pair of Skate roller ski and continue working on it. And your video's been of great help!

I have lost count how many times I have watched it but every time I learned something useful.

Last but not least, any chance you will consider making videos about classic roller skiing? I am also into that as well.

The progression of these drills are excellent! Very well done!

Excellent drills. I found a double leg hop (static then on the move) to be a good warmer upper before daring to try the single leg hop for the first time. Both helped enormously so these are great drills, thanks.

Really good stuff Scott. This is some of the best V2 technique training I've come across. Do you offer any technique tips for videos sent to you? Could you provide that service?

Another great video. So much content to perfect. Can't wait until storm Babet moves on. Re the centre-out exercise: does it matter which "cones" you use. I have inline slalom skating cones - it kind of looked like the move needs to touch/rest on the cones.

Thanks so much for these drills and lectures, so helpful. What is the right position of the upper body? I do not really understand the statement: "avoid to bend from the knee to the hip, instead bend from the toe to the knee". Is my upper body in the up-position slightly bend forward, and is my my knee fully stretched? Any checkpoints here I can watch out for? Thanks for your advice.

I'm training athletes, kids, for competitions. My equipment is terrible. Children's leg slides are difficult due to their small size. But where should I start? Do you have Facebook to send you clips to watch?

Great video. I looking to start roller skiing. Any recommendations on equipment?

My coach tells me that I have to come out on already stretched leg and roll on it rather than to make a U-move and to shift the weight to this leg and try to stand up from the bended leg (position). What is actually the right way to stretch the main leg ? What are the actual phases of the weight shifting up to the final standing position?

I use skinning and skate techniques for forward movement when skiing. Is it possible to do these skate techniques with "classic" rollerskis, or would that be too awkward?

Tips: use gloves. Don't try to squeeze the life out of the pole-handles, lose grip, relaxed hands, let the force go through the straps, control the poles with the fingertips. Also the best way to get the relaxed high-speed V2 is to practise "marathon-skate/one-sided skate" three kicks to one side then alternate with 3 to the other side, then increase the side-switching to every 2 strides and eventually to every kick.
