I'm having a new problem lately where in a near empty theater, someone comes in late and apparently picked the seat directly next to me out of all the other available seats. Has happened twice now and not the same person. I don't know if they are hoping for some kind of encounter or what, but it's unbelievably weird and creepy. I end up just giving them a weird look and moving away. Just another reason to watch at home and enjoy the movie in peace.

Audiences can certainly ruin the movie theatre experience when they won't shut off their phones, when they talk too loudly, when they don't settle down to be respectful of their fellow movie viewers, etc. and particularly when movie tickets as well as food prices there have skyrocketed.

Nothing beats a theatre experience for me. Nothing at home even comes close.

I have a cinema 10 minute walk from my house . For only £18 (24 $) a month i get to see anything i want . It's showing so many classics . I saw Twister on Friday, and i'm seeing Interstellar in Imax tonight. Best way to see a movie is in the cinema.

Previews use to be 10 minutes, now they are 25 minutes. Ridiculous!!

I completely agree. It's a long drive for me. The prices are high, but the biggest issue is people acting like they're in their living rooms.

I still love going to the movie theater because watching with a crowd of people amplifies the experience. You can’t have the same kind of shared shock when Darth said, “No. I am your father.”
Or the extra laughter of the crowd during a comedy. I can’t wait to see The Substance with a crowd. It’s gonna be awesome!!

Guys, NEVER stop going to movies at theatres! If they go away like Blockbusters and movie rental places, we’ll be in an even worse spot.

I used to go just about every week during the nineties and early aughts, but between rude patrons, high prices, and, let's keep it real, less "must-see" films, I've opted to stay home more and more. Another negative is the fact that you have to kind of schedule your whole day around making it to the theater at a particular time. I have enough annoying appointments, I hardly feel the need to subject myself to another😂 My personal favorite "annoying moviegoer" story is when I went to see "The Insider" way back in the day. Just me and one other dude. But every time someone spoke on the screen, he decided to provide the dialogue via an assortment of prolonged belches that echoed throughout the theater and sent my blood pressure soaring. Ah, good times!

I just found your channel today and subscribed. Lots of great content. I totally agree with you about going to the movie theater. Back in the day it was so fun to go. Something to look forward to. Nowadays, not so much for all the reasons you listed. I wish these places would up their game because even though I don’t enjoy going that much anymore I would hate to see them go away. Have a fantastic week ahead. 👍

So thankful I’m in Austin with Alamo Drafthouse everywhere.. No talking or texting baby!! The main thing keeping me from the theater these days is being broke as fuck and everything being so expensive.

Going on 60, I haven't really been a frequent theater goer since Freddy vs. Jason(how long ago was that?) when people essentially became nothing but cesspool animals. Other than 24 Hour Sci-Fi/Horror Marathons, drive-in showings and specialty premieres and such, I haven't had the urge to go on frequent basis.mainly for most of the reasons you mentioned. And this is coming from a guy who spent MANY a night at the drive-ins and grindhouses of the 70s/80s. People have just become worse. Every theater has NOT become an open invitation for every drunken wannabe MST3K'er. Unless it is in 35mm for the most part, it's just watching a disc, which most can watch anytime anymore. I even remember to going drive-in all nighters for less than $1, , , and you even got free coffee, OJ and donuts at the end. Somehow, society itself has fallen down so badly, that even a goodtime treat like going to the movies just isn't fun anymore...and it is society's fault. If you look around at the world, it's not just movie going...it's the world, too....movie going is just an example.

My wife and I went this weekend and they showed about 10 minutes of commercials before the trailers even started. And I mean starting at start time. Regal is the worst. Thankfully I have another theater in town that’s much less egregious, but the times at that one didn’t work for us.

Once upon a time going to the movies was an event. You went to these palaces that where spotless. The ticket prices was just $4.25. The sound system was analog, so it was a really warm sound and everybody there had one thing in mind, to have a great time. Today.. there are no more palaces but multiplexes. The screens there are slightly larger than the one I have at home. (I have a projector and screen that is 365") the audio is a harsh digital that they like to play at unhealthy levels. The prices, one ticket you can download or buy the Blu-ray for the same price, maybe less! We live in different times now so you really don't know who sits next to you and with what intention besides watching the movie.
I'm staying home thanks.

I'm with you two on this. Post pandemic almost every experience I've had at the theater has been bad. In 2024 I've felt like going to the theater only twice, both for re-releases of films that were over 40 years old. There's just nothing I want to see anymore that justifies $16 for a movie. Most of the screens are tiny and no one who works there cares about presentation. One of the theaters by me has drink stains all over the screens. I always feel like I need to burn my shoes after walking on the sticky floors. One of the theaters near me was actually cited by the health department. People don't know how to behave during films, as you said. One time a guy sat down right next to me and started shelling peanuts during the entire film. It was noisy and he left a huge mess all over the place including it getting on my tray and seat. There's also just not a lot of new movies I really want to see. I'm not into horror and I feel like half the films that come out these days are such. The whole experience is just a mess and I don't want to deal with it. I'll be at home with my discs watching Eraserhead for the 1000th time.

My biggest issues going to the movies are people related. Lack of consideration etc. tickets are generally pretty affordable -$8 per around here in Mid-Michigan.

That's why I own a projector and complete atmos system in my living room. So the movie experience is alive and well at home. Nothing cooler than having your own theater 😊

Excellent video topic, well done, thanks. Last theater visit for me was about a dozen years ago. I remember walking out saying it was my last time, and for that particular visit the speaker volume was way too high and central air had me freezing, uncomfortable all around.

Oh I forgot to add that I do agree with you about the excessive ads and trailers. Theres like 10+ mins of ads, 10+ mins of theater specific promotional stuff, and up to 5-7 trailers. If you get there 15-20 mins before showtime like me it can be a 40-45 min wait before the actual movie starts. In the 90s there was maybe 1 quick ad, 3 trailers, then into the film. Trailers do show too much, I usually look away after 1st min or so. I never watch full trailers at home either, you can get the gist of a movie from the first 30 seconds usually. Also I wont touch my food till the film starts, cause as you said the ads are so long if you start too soon youll finish your stuff before the film even starts.

I can relate and agree with most of your talking points here. I really can't stand the people that not only talk in the theatre but I've literally seen people on their phones during the movie. Cost is a big one of course. What as a whole takes away from the experience is the excessive amount of previews and ads we have to sit through before the movie.
