Dope review bro! I'm a workstation guy, the one thing that caused me to hesitate on the mpc key is the load times. I have all the mpcs/force and seeing that the extra memory didn't change the loading time on the sounds of the keyboard was a big deal for me. Workstations for me are about being able to access sounds quickly, otherwise I can just use my computer with Komplete control if I have to wait for loading lol. Looking forward to checking this board out as well! Wish we could have heard you play it bro!

I already have an mpc X and live so I went with the Roland Fantom 06. Definitely better sounds, library and sound design programmability and sequence with my mpcs. Much respect to the mpc keys but it still has a ways to go far as programmability. If I had no mpcs an I wanted a sampling workstation then the mpc keys would be my first choice.

They really shouldn’t be compared they are an awesome duo. Pair any mpc with a fantom an it’s a killer combo same thing with a motif/ montage or modx.

You just answered all my questions! Thank you! I need a workstation for performing on stage and I guess Roland Fantom 06 will be the best choice for me.

Thank you for the review. Bruh, you have to overcome your bias and dig into that sequencer🙂. I promise you that if invest sufficient time to truly comprehend that sequencer, you will see how amazing it is, especially when you’re on a live gig. I absolutely love the new workflow for the Fantom (I have the 88 key flagship. I am not here to say that “one platform is better than the other.“ It is different. Period. You just have to understand how to flow on that platform. It’s just like a Mac vs. PC. Different platforms, different workflow. Don’t sleep on it.

I only have the FA 06, and would still take it over the MPC 61-all the built in supernatural, the axial patches of older roland gear, synth capabilities, and so on..now I do already own a MPC one(and got a REN while others getting the keys 61).To me MPC means finger drumming and I want them in front of me so I can let loose.I really like the studio set vs the programs on MPC.I like my combo I have a wide variety of options and sounds-but I think the KEYS 61 would be good for a newbie who has nothing to start with

Hi, there are plenty of videos detailing the sound design & sequencing on the Roland Fantom 06 for beginners like you to learn from. It is really easy once you try it a few times. I hope you get the hang of it soon. I encourage beginners like you to try new things! Good for you! Don't get stuck on one brand as you'll limit yourself.

There's no aftertouch on the Fantom 06

Fantom 0 also has a built-in 4x32 USB audio interface, while native integration with Logic Pro, MainStage, and Ableton Live lets you interact with the software using the touchscreen and hardware controls. and Control knob x 8
Slider x 8. If you are new to Roland it will be a little learning Curve. $300 cheaper. Good review!

I think if you have to pick one to be on a deserted island with and you can only use the built in sounds and sequencer to make tracks, MPC wins. If you are using this for playing live in a band, I think Roland wins.
If you use this as a hybrid setup, the waters get a little muddy since the MPC has it's own software and Roland has DAW integration.

I think if the mpc keys had 8 track faders like the fantom I would be tempted to get it. The fantom really lacks the sampling capability of the mpc, but the fantom can quickly build songs especially with the new clip launching mode.

Roland fantom 06 comes with a built-in audio interface which is highly convenient if you don't have an audio interface. Roland is the winner in so many ways!

Does it have some of the same sounds as the Fantom X6, patches like "Hero's Theme" for example? I was thinking about buying the 06 this week. I played around with it (for a short time) at Guitar Center once.

I am starting to produce music. I primarily play for church and a few studio sessions. I was looking at both keyboards to upgrade my Yamaha MX 49. This really helps.

The Roland Fantom-0 overall is the better instrument...MPC Keys 61 is the better sampler and sequencer for music production, great at a stationary position but not overall it just can’t compete. It's a tough call but I would have to go with the Roland on this one. It’s just more versatile in the studio and in live performance most important feature of a keyboard in a live situation even in an house situation seamless sound switching the Fantom has that! MPC though its nice I feel like it’s a huge waste of money. I could get the exact same features with the MPC Studio 2 and the software at a cheaper deal. So Fantom-0 all the way but MPC for production purposes.

It's funny... Because when the mpc keys came out, my first thought was "wow....Akai just came out with a Roland Fantom... 😆". Having used a Fantom X6 for years, I don't see the need for anyone who already has an mpc to buy the mpc keys. If you have a keyboard workstation you already have the keys and there's a good chance you have better sounds. Akai provides a top notch sequencer and sampler but that's about it. The mpc keys doesn't give you sliders (for drawbar manipulation of organs) which is a huge fail for me. You also don't get 8 outputs which should be mandatory for an MPC in that price range. The Akai gives you 4 gig of ram, so does my 11 year old Korg Kronos X plus the Kronos has disk streaming which the Akai does NOT have. The MPC Keys kinda falls flat for me but that's just my opinion though.

I have a Roland Ds 61 keyboard its has over 800 sounds. I can use this keyboard as a 16 midi channels in performance mode with any DAW. Roland keyboards always had great sound engines.

A library of Roland and Korg sounds is a must for any setup. I have always kept a couple of Roland modules around. Currently an SD80, MS2000r and Monologue running into the MPC. Recommend the SD80 it is reasonably priced and a step above most of the other canvasses, plenty of ports, 128 voices etc etc.
