It went free on PlayStation, and I picked it up. Its actually incredibly fun. There are a lot of references to the old games, but its mostly focus on a new region, and tries to tell story thats disconnected from the others so that its not limited the choices players made in those games. I understand, and I enjoyed the combat and quality of life improvements. Personally, the story was not as compelling as the original, and the companions are just not as memorable as Dragon Age Inquisition. I love Dragon Age as a whole, but this felt like more like fun action adventure spin-off to move the plot along. Would have loved to keep this series going but I know people lost their shit over the like the one singular non-binary character in the game. Which is weird because the game series has always been incredibly progressive, so it's weird to see fans of the old games complain about this one.

Yea the success is because the prior games and the IP… it’s not that difficult to understand. It’s an average action game but if you played any of the prior games it’s a massive let down and you will more than likely be disappointed unless you are wanting to like it.

The advice to have your own opinions is solid. But when games cost upwards of $60 or more, it can be expensive to buy something only to find out you didn't like it. The more correct advice is to form your own opinions, AND find reviewers that have proven to have views about things similar to your own.
