I had to learn this lesson the hard way. I was told i would not feel pain, just pressure. They prescribed me an antianxiety med to be taken before the procedure. I asked why i would need an antianxiety med if there wasnt going to be pain. They said some people need it to deal with the “pressure”. They urged me to take it. I did. I arrived for my procedure and they had me get in a gown and get up on the table. They introduced me to the nurse who was going to hold me on the table. I asked, “hold me on the table? Why do i need someone to hold me on the table?” If they have a staff member ready to hold you on the table ahead of time, you should assume its going to be painful. It was. I was screaming and writhing and the woman was doing her job, holding me down on the table, while the doc yelled at me and told me we couldnt do the procedure if i didnt hold still. I asked why on earth they dont prescribe pain meds or put women under for this procedure. The doc said, “there is no need to. This is a quick procedure. Anesthesia is not required.” I told them they were crazy and they told me i was being overdramatic. The nurse did her job and that is why they were able to finish the procedure. It was not within my capacity to willingly hold still. Afterwards the doc told me he was done, to clean myself up in the bathroom and go home. I will never understand why its important for people to interchange the word pressure for pain.

I wish there were more doctors like you. Thank you for truly caring about your patients.

My endometrial smear was horrifically painful🤬 I know for a fact that when men have invasive procedures on their genitals or prostate they most certainly have some sort of lidocaine or numbing solution. Can you imagine having a vasectomy without Novocain? I think it would be looked upon as cruel and inhumane but it’s ok for women to have pieces of their uterus swiped out 3 times with no pain relief. Something is terribly wrong here. It doesn’t matter if the procedure takes 1 minute or 10 minutes, let’s figure out a way to take care of women in their times of need as painless as possible.

Worked as a vet tech for 9 years and we treat animals better than people. They don’t have to suffer through minimal pain. It’s horrible when we say the pain is short duration. Who cares. I, myself, do not want any pain at any duration.

Why don’t they premedicate for something like this?

How I wish you were in DFW. My obgyn retired and he was like you. Honestly so hard to find because of medical gaslighting. My daughter needs a doctor like you. And pinch my a$$. That is a sharp, acute pain. It’s equivalent to removing a chunk of flesh. You get local when you get a dermatological punch biopsy and this is a tender spot to begin with. I’m saying this as an EDS patient that understands pain, the different types, and how they feel very well.

Yeah, endometrial biopsy is more than a little pinch. My female gyn oncologist warned me that I’d hate her for a few minutes and she was really sorry. At least I was prepared.

It's not the pain I had a problem with, it's the crunch

So you say it's uncomfortable (don't tell them it may be painful)? It's NOT uncomfortable, pain is not discomfort

Even something as simple as a PAP can be painful. I’ve had experiences where I had to tell the doctor to take the speculum out of me because he’d cranked me open like the hood of a car. Sir. I’m made of flesh!! But there ARE good and wonderful providers out there. Just had a PAP with the loveliest NP. I just wish those amazing people weren’t so hard to find and that dealing with difficult patients didn’t desensitize and disenchant them.

I was prescribed cytocel or whatever it's called which I had to take two hours before my transvaginal ultrasound and my uterine biopsy back in 2019

Also, don't be afraid to advocate for yourself. Google the procedure first, and insist on numbing cream or something. Stand your ground. If that doctor won't work with you, end the appointment and go elsewhere with your head held high.
