In The Problem With Apu, South Asian-American comedian Hari Kondabolu confronts his long-standing “nemesis” Apu Nahasapeemapetilon – better known as the Indian convenience store owner on The Simpsons. Creator and star Kondabolu discusses how this controversial caricature was created, burrowed its way into the hearts and minds of Americans, and continues to exist – intact – nearly three decades later. Featuring interviews with Aziz Ansari, Kal Penn, Whoopi Goldberg, W. Kamau Bell, Aasif Mandvi, Hasan Minhaj, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Aparna Nancherla
and more, the hour-long documentary premieres Sunday, November 19 at 10PM ET/PT on truTV.

Apu is the most welcoming, friendly and hard working family man in that show, he is a lovable character.
this guy is making noise purely to promote his movie.

Kal Penn is the same guy that portrayed a Muslim guy threatening to blow up a plane in Harold and Kumar 2 and he has the nerve to say that Apu offends him

I'm Scottish and I don't find Willie offensive. He has a ridiculously exaggerated accent and is a total stereotype but it's not like he's portrayed as an idiot or anything. He's strong, hardworking, understanding and brave. Apu is also very kind, smart, hard working etc.

I don't think this guy has watched a single episode of the Simpsons if he really understood Apu as a character

As an Indian these people are such losers. He is such a good character. I I love Apu. I've experienced racial slurs due to being Indian growing up in Australia. Apu was someone I was always proud of seeing on the world's largest cartoon series. To see an Indian character was an honour.

I like how he says "You hate yourself" like he really thinks he has a point.

"I have let it go, for 28 years"

That's not the definition of letting go.

I don’t know, I’ve always considered Apu to be a more well-rounded character and less of a one-joke catchphrase like a lot of the other stereotype characters such as the Italian Chef, Bumblebee Man or Groundskeeper Willie.

I feel sorry for this guy, he will go down in history not so much because of his career as a comedian but because of what he did to Apu ...

This move has caused unrepairable damage to the Indian community's image to the world

The "comedian" didn't get the joke.

I'm a mexican woman and I laugh at mexican and misogynist jokes because it's COMEDY.

If the biggest hardship you've ever faced in 28 years is Apu's accent, you made it into the first world.

I'm Indian and I love Apu he's a better role model than most bollywood protagonists. He's romantic, intelligent, kind and has a doctorate. All the women of Springfield wanted his chocolate thunder and he's a good husband and father. I always found the character well fleshed despite the initial stereotypical facade as is the case of all characters in The Simpsons, they're all stereotypes in one form or another. Some less flattering than others. You don't see Caucasian Americans getting upset coz homer is depicted as an obese abusive obnoxious fool or that the southerners are all inbred and dumb literally everyone is a stereotype. That's what satire is

I don't like the "voiced by a white guy" argument. One of the greatest things about animation is that men and women of all races can play characters swapping genders and ethnicities. Should Bart be played by a man? Should Phil LaMarr be replaced by a Japanese actor for Samurai? Is it wrong Eddie Murphy played Muschu?

Of course this is just the trailer so maybe it goes more into it but it's a lousy argument that will only fit actors into custon made boxes.

As an Indian, I really don't find any problem with Apu. If anything, he is one of the more fleshed out side characters in an animated television show. He is as much a stereotype of Indian culture to a Westerner's eye as Homer himself is emblematic of popular blue collar conceptions of idiocy. And oftentimes, he is often shown to be one of the more brighter characters in the simpsons universe (given that he is probably the only character besides Professor Frink who has a PhD )
