Native American Cultures (1491-1607) - (APUSH Period 1 / APUSH Chapter 1)

This video lesson for US History students summarizes the key characteristics of the cultures of the major Native American people groups in North America (Arctic, Plains, Northeast/Great Lakes, Southwest, Southeast) the time of European contact. Native American tribes had a variety of different lifestyles that were influenced by the environment on different sections of the North American continent.

The new AP US History curriculum places greater emphasis on history prior to 1607. This lecture was designed to familiarize students with this material, which has not been covered in-depth in most classrooms in the past.

This lecture aligns with APUSH Key Concept 1.1 and should appear in chapter 1 in most APUSH textbooks.

Key Concept 1.1: As native populations migrated and settled across the vast expanse of North America over time, they developed distinct and increasingly complex societies by adapting to and transforming their diverse environments.

You can just copy down the graphic organizer at 13:59 if you want, also if you pause then click the comma (, ) and period (.) keys you can go frame by frame to get the whole organizer in the shot. Have fun with your homework and like this comment so other people can see it.

Three Sisters- beans suck nitrogen from the air and puts it into the soil. The corn sucks up the nitrogen and provides a trellis for the beans to climb. The squash spreads out and smothers weeds that may compete with the corn or beans. The 3 sisters fall under what farmers call companion planting. For instance, you can plant onion next to most anything, except beans or peas. Onion and other alliums are good natural big repellent for crops.

These videos got me a 5 on the AP Euro exam last year, so I expect these should be most excellent as well. Glad I'm not anathema!

Unlike with Euro, when I crammed in a bunch of studying in the last few weeks, I'm starting my Richey-reviewing at the beginning of the year. I'm really looking forward to this course. Thank you, Mr. Richey!

This video is from a few years ago, but I believe out of the arctic tribes mentioned in this video the ones grouped under the Eskimo label (Aleut and Yup'ik, as well as Inuit) generally prefer their tribal names to the word Eskimo. I know there is intercommunity discourse over this, though, and I am by no means an expert nor an arctic native, so take this with a grain of salt. "Eskimo" is commonly used as an umbrella term for the arctic tribal groups, but it originated from a term that the Algonquin group used to refer to the Inuit that was either "raw flesh eaters" or "snowshoe-lacers". The latter wouldn't be rude, but the common belief right now is that it was the former. The word Eskimo has been used in a derogatory fashion to refer to arctic tribes, though, so regardless of its origin, the respective tribal names or another term should be used when possible if you're not an arctic native. Thanks and have a good APUSH course (since I'm assuming that's why all of us are here)!

The AP teacher I'm going to have next year is so fond of your videos that she made them a part of our summer assignment. I'm lucky that I actually enjoy these videos too, or else this summer assignment would be so much worse!

placing down a small "I was here" for the APUSH students for the future. Hopefully this marking will preserve at least somewhat against the waves of time
