I have made calls in the past year (at least twice) to the City i.r.o fires lit in the veld area next to the Acacia High Voltage Substation. Presumably these are fires lit either maliciously or fires started to melt copper wire coatings. Either way, people are not meant to be loitering or creating 'mischief' in an area adjacent to a national key point. The City has a habit of batting such problems back to either PRASA or Eskom. It's never their fault….of course. This situation is ENTIRELY preventable. Metro Police have a very important role to play in that area by simply parking their patrol vehicles on the verge of the N1. It would solve three immediate problems - (1) fires being started in the substation veld resulting in outages (2) preventing pedestrians from crossing the N1 between Canal Walk and the substation and (3) motorcyclists like Zelda Van Niekerk and other road users getting fatally shot when their vehicles break down. BUT…..it's never a priority to act preventatively for the CoCT - only punitively. You won't get a fine's worth from a veld fire starter but you will get a fine's worth from law abiding citizens.
