Who is the intended audience for Prince Peach Showtime? Probably not a guy in his 30s, but, you know, I’ve been playing Nintendo games my entire life, I’m not going to skip a big Switch game just because it was clearly created for little girls, right?
My wife and I actually played this one together; we traded the controller back and forth between levels, and I have a couple of big takeaways from the experience - some good and some bad. Truly, we didn’t hate it. It definitely has that indescribable Nintendo charm. It has a big focus on gameplay variety, and although not every different gameplay scenario was a hit, enough of them were fun to make it a good time, overall.
Nintendo games, generally, really do feel like they’re meant for anyone, of any age, but this is one of the only games from Nintendo that I’ver ever played that felt distinctly like it was “not meant for me”. And I don’t think that just because it is a game where you play as a princess. A lot of the game just felt easy and simple, like it was clearly designed to be played by kids.
And I get it, every demographic deserves to have games made specifically for them. But it does feel a bit odd, because we all know that Nintendo’s audience isn’t just kids, a lot of the people who play their games are like me and my wife: we’ve been playing mario games our entire lives.
Usually they do such a good job of catering to the entire spectrum of their audience, but this one does feel distinctly different. I’m not saying an adult can’t enjoy Princess Peach Showtime, because we did enjoy it, but just not nearly as much as we’ve enjoyed other Nintendo games set in the mario universe.
